The only field of engineering that makes an individual technically equipped , while instilling efficient management techniques , is industrial engineering. Industrial engineering is all about designing/ managing methods and procedures to increase productivity, quality and efficiency in manufacturing processes. The increasing complexity of industrial operations and the expansion of automated processes in factories is adding to the demand for industrial engineers. In today's competitive world, companies are trying to cut costs and improve efficiency. Most of them choose to outsource experience industrial engineers.

To become a professor of industrial engineering, an aspirant needs to have minimum MTech Industrial Engineering/ Industrial Engineering & Operational Research or Manufacturing & Production Engineering. However it is strongly recommended that an aspirant keen on taking up teaching as profession must pursue PhD to improve his career prospects. Some of the eminent institutes offering undergraduate , post graduate and research opportunities in industrial engineering are :-

IITs Mumbai/ Delhi/ Kanpur/ Chennai/ Guwahati/ Roorkee/ Kharagpur

Vellore Institute of Technology , Vellore

JNTU Hyderabad

Dear aspirant

A professor career is definitely reputable and highly professional academic oriented career. To become a professor of any subject, in India it is mandatory for students to follow a compulsory rule 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 route. I shall explain it step by step below.

  • You should have passed 10th class with minimum 60% (This is 10)
  • You should have passed 12th class with minimum 60% (This is +2)
  • You should have compulsorily studied a three year bachelors degree like the BA/ BSC/ BCOM/ BBA and have passed with minimum first class (this is known as +3). But as you are desiring to be a professor of Industrial engineering you should only study a related bachelors degree and this is like BE/ BTech Industrial engineering, BE/ BTech production engineering, BE/ BTech Mechanical engineering or BE/ BTech Industrial management. Only these four undergraduate courses are considered as eligible for becoming an industrial engineer or even studying further in similar line. As you are completing a four year bachelors degree, then this means you get +4. So as of now, you are with the basic eligibility criteria 10+2+4 route.
  • So after this bachelors, you can straight away enrol in a PhD degree if you like and most of the IIT institutes in India accept students with only a bachelors degree for a PhD but please be aware that only IIT permits where as all other universities across India demands a compulsory masters course related to industrial engineering. If you want to study in IIT after Bachelors degree, then you should score a minimum of 75% in this bachelors degree, plus cleared GATE exam conducetd by IIT. then you can apply for IIT's that has the course and if you are short listed then you will be called in for an interview. if you write the entarnce test and also clear personal interview then you can be admitted for a phd at IIT. IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras are the top ones for this course.
  • If you want to do a masters and then apply for a PhD, it is also a good decision. To study a PhD, you should have either written GATE for IIT after a ME/ MTech. You should also pass this masters with minimum 60%. If you want to study at other universities, then you should write UGC NET, CSIR or UGC JRF exam. UGC NET is compulsory for a PhD admission and a UGC JRF will keep you eligible to qualify for a monthly stipend. So with these qualifications you are eligible to apply for a PhD and completing it you are either an Assistant professor or Professor of Industrial engineering.

All the best.
