Hi,

To study Psychology you have to pass your 10th std and then in 11th you decide your subjects according to your future plans. Now her in 11th you can take psychology as one of the subjects if you want to go for Psychotherapy. But if you want to do clinical psychology then you will have to pass 12th with Biology. Further you will have to study medicine and then specialize in neuro sciences.

You have not mentioned your current education status , it would have been easy for me to guide you. One thing more i wanted to know that what is your future plan, whether you want to become a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist. All will depend on these questions which i wanted you to make it clear over here.

Biology is required in 12th, when you want to become a psychiatrist . To study the working of the brain you need to be thorough with the structure of the brain. For becoming a psychiatrist you should know about the medicines , which can be used to treat the patients.

I think the above explanation will help you understand about your question. Think again what you want to become. If you do not want to study biology , then you can go for psychology as a subject in 11th and become a psychotherapist or a counselor. This is a very well growing field in the current scenario of studies and jobs. More and more people are opting for it, as it gives flexibility to earn through two sources. You can enroll your self with an educational institutes , hospitals, corporate companies or any college etc and you can work as free lancer by taking cases in your own office or home. As the stress is growing in the society due to various internal and external reasons, more and more people are seeking their help. Be it any age group of children, adults, house wives, old retired parents, people working in corporate companies etc are going through certain problems which only a learned and experienced psychotherapist can solve. So you must have understood whether you study biology or not you can help people by studying psychology.

ALL THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!

Hi There,

Before I answer your query.
My question to you is Do you wish to pursue a B.Sc or a BA in Psychology.

When you attain a B.Sc in Psychology, though you do not have Biology as a separate subject, but Psychology and Biology are interlined.Though they would emphasize on studying Biology and its connection with the mind.
When it comes to BA in Psychology, though the student knows bits and parts of biology, since Psychology is mind science, they are more exposed to concepts of Psychology in relation to Psychometric assessments and therapies.

So based on the degree you opt for the subjects would follow.

Generally someone interested in Criminology or forensic Psychology at the masters level, opts for a B.Sc in Psychology.

Hope this helps.

Wish you good luck...............

Dear Aspirant,

Thanks for writing to www.CareerGuide.com!

No. You do not require to have biology as a subject to become a psychologist. After 12th, you can pursue either BSc or BA, then MSc or MA, and PhD. To become a clinical psychologist, you can do MPhil in clinical psychology. However, biology helps you study clinical psychology better. There is one subject in masters course, psycho-biology or biological basis of bahavior.

If you are looking forward to bece psychiatrist, you need biology and complete MBBS. After MBBS, you can opt for MD in psychiatry to become psychiatrist.

Hope this is helpful.
Best Wishes,
