Please note that IPS is a part of the Civil service exams, conducted by the UPSC.
So inorder to be an IPS, you need to be a Graduate in any field / stream with minimum 50%.
After Graduation, you would have to appear for the civil service exam.
The exam consist of prelims and mains.
In terms of preparation, classes are available which you could join. Apart from that please note that Reading is a must. So read everything right from politics to history to current affairs to logic to sports to any subject you could think of. Not just reading but being able to articulate it with logic and being witty is essential.
