PCM or commonly referred to as the stream of Pure Science is the most chosen stream in India. The career options in science are vast and it also opens the gateway to switch to different streams in colleges. Usually, the students take up science thinking that the main career option after PCM in class 12 is engineering but in reality, it is something different. Apart from the traditional career paths, there are numerous budding career options in India, which a PCM student can opt for. Here is the list of top career options that one can choose after completing class 12 in PCM.


Engineering

Engineering is the most common degree that one can think of when choosing PCM in class 11 and 12. Engineering may sound clichéd but it still has value and worth when done from the right institute. India is home to at least 5000 engineering colleges working in different parts of the country. IITs are considered the most prestigious institutes of India but there are plenty of private colleges that have proven their value over time. Computer Science Engineering is one of the most preferred streams in engineering and is believed to have good packages and better financial stability.

Bachelor of Computer Applications, BCA

BCA is an easy-going undergraduate degree for students who wish to build a career in the field of Computer Applications and IT. BCA usually tends to comprise mathematics i.e., aptitude, along with computational knowledge. In India, BCA is offered by many colleges and many students also prefer to opt for a master of computer applications (MCA) which could cater for a higher job designation and hence better personal growth & financial stability. Post completion of the BCA degree, one can expect to get positions like web developer, website designing, later full stack developer, and so on.

Bachelor of Science

Bachelor of Science is the most basic degree where students like to graduate core subjects. Students who wish to become a professor teacher, or a lecturer mostly opt for it. With the evolving time around us, people can now enter into the corporate world by being a BSc graduate. Subjects like Statistics, Computer Science or Information Technology (IT) have made BSc graduates ready for any service-based company. There are mainly three types of BSc degrees in India, Bachelor of Science (general), Bachelor of Science (Honours), and Bachelor of Science (Triple Major). Thousands of colleges offer BSc degree in multiple specializations in India.


Architecture

Bachelor of Architecture is a UG program spread over 5 years. It is an uncommon and non-clichéd degree program that one can undertake if things like Interior design, building architecture, rural & urban planning, construction management, landscape architecture, transportation planning, etc. excites them. The only PCM passed outs are eligible for this degree and most of the pioneering institutes grant admissions based on merit scored in the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) or Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). On successful completion of the degree, interested candidates may opt for a diploma in a particular specialisation like Diploma in landscape design or a Diploma in interior design or as per their interest, for further career growth.

National Defence Academy

National Defence Academy (NDA) is a joint academy that includes the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian AirForce. NDA trains aspirants before they go to their particular service academy for further specialised training. Only the PCM pass outs are allowed in NDA and they need to appear in the NDA entrance exam followed by the round of SSB interview (considered as one of the toughest interviews in India). NDA takes admissions twice a year. Apart from clearing the written round, aspirants need to pass the physical fitness test to secure a seat in the prestigious National Defence Academy.


Commercial Pilot

If Aeroplanes excites you and you don’t want to be stuck in a 9-5 job, Commercial Pilot could be one of the viable options for you. The time for Commercial Pilot License is two years and only PCM students can opt for it. Initially, the cost for the program is high but the salary that will get once placed compensates everything. There are many institutes like Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy, Bombay Flying Club, etc., in India that offers Commercial Pilot License (CPL).

Forensic Science

Forensic Science is a budding career option in India. As the crime rate is soaring high, India needs Forensic Scientists who could probably collect evidence, document it and analyse it to conclude a probable result from it. Forensic Science needs application from several branches of Science like Biology, Chemistry, Anthropology, Physics, etc. The most popular degree is a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science. Universities like Gujarat Forensic Sciences University, Delhi University, etc. are some of the leading universities in India for forensic Science.
