About Mysore University
On July 27, 1916, the University of Mysore was founded. It is the country’s sixth oldest and the first in the state of Karnataka. In some ways, it is also the country’s first university to be created beyond the borders of British India. The generous and imaginative Maharaja of the erstwhile Princely State of Mysore, His Highness Shri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar – IV (1884-1940), and the then Diwan Sir M. Visvesvaraya (1860-1962), worked together to establish the institution. It was the first university to receive Five Star accreditation from NAAC in 2000. The university is now placed 19th in the NIRF-MHRD, Government of India, India Rankings 2021.
The university is located in Mysuru, Karnataka’s cultural capital. Mysuru was the Wadiyar dynasty’s capital. It is a palace, temple, and garden city. It is well-known for silk, sandalwood oil, and ivory and sandalwood antiques, as well as being a magnificent tourist destination with historical sites and unique architecture. The city enjoys a pleasant climate all year. It is located approximately 140 kilometers south-west of Bengaluru, the state capital, and is well connected by rail, road, and air.
Following an evaluation of its overall performance, the University of Mysore was first accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with Five Star rating in the year 2000, and was reaccredited at the A+ level in 2006. In 2013, NACC reaccredited A grade.
The university’s motto, “Na Hi Jñanena Sadrusham” (Nothing compares with knowledge) is taken from the Bhagavad Gita.
