The debate of Economics being an Arts or Science is never-ending and therefore perceiving economics as an Art is also important. A BSc Eco deals with more practical knowledge and technicalities of the subject, whereas BA Eco deals with the theoretical aspects of Economics, like history, politics, and so on. This article will try to put forth the top BA economics colleges of India, based on quality of education, placement opportunities, the scope for research, and so on.
1) Lady Shri Ram College of Commerce, LSRCC Delhi
Lady Shri Ram College of Commerce is one of the best colleges of the country for Arts and Commerce. Being set up in the year 1956, it is affiliated to the Delhi University and serves as a public college. LSRCC is also approved by the UGC and is accredited with a grade “A+” by NAAC. The college is highly competitive and the cut-offs for BA Economics (Honours) is usually 100% in top 4 subjects in class 12.
2) St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai
St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai is a prestigious science and arts autonomous institute of India. It is one of the oldest colleges of India, which came into existence in the year 1869, and is currently affiliated with the University of Mumbai. The institute offers a Bachelor of Arts in a total of 11 streams, and Economics is one of them. Admissions into these BA programs are on the basis of merit scored in class 12. The cut-offs are generally very high and competitive as the number of student intake is very low.

3) Loyola College, Chennai
Loyola College, Chennai, was set up by the Society of Jesus, in the year 1925. It is one amongst the premier colleges of South India for economics which is recognised by the UGC, and has been accredited with grade “A” by NAAC. It is an autonomous institute that is affiliated with the University of Madras. Loyola Chennai offers Bachelor of Arts in 6 streams and it grants admission on the basis of merit scored in class 12, followed by a personal interview round.
4) Miranda House, Delhi
Miranda House Delhi is an all-women college aided by the government. It was established in the year 1948 and is affiliated with the Delhi University. It has consistently secured top 3 positions for Arts colleges in India, by several surveys, in the past few years. The college offers a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 11 streams, and eco is one of the top priority streams. Admissions for BA programs are done on the basis of merit scored in class 12. Miranda House is among the top 5 DU colleges and hence faces high competition, leading to high cut-offs.
5) Christ University, CU Bengaluru
Christ University is a private deemed-to-be university, established in the year 1969, in Bengaluru. It is well known for Arts UG programs and BA Economics is a promising course of CU. Interested candidates need to present their class 10 & class 11 or class 12 (whichever applicable), and based on which students need to appear for Christ University Entrance Test (CUET), followed by a skill test and a personal interview. Christ is also known for internship and placement opportunities for its students.

6) Presidency College, Chennai
Presidency College Chennai is a public college, which was set up by the British India Govt., in the year 1840. It is approved by AICTE and is affiliated with the University of Madras. The college offers Bachelor of Arts programs in 8 streams and Economics is one of them. The admissions into these BA programs are based on the merit scored in class 12, and being a public college, Presidency College follows a very decent fee structure.
7) Hansraj College, Delhi
Hansraj College is another public college, and a prominent part of Delhi University. It was established in the year 1948 and is graded “A+” by NAAC for its top-notch education. The college offers Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 6 disciplines in total and BA Economics Honours are the popular one, among all. Admissions are based on DU guidelines, merit scored in class 12.

8) Hindu College, Delhi
Hindu College was set up by Late Shri Krishan Dassji Gurwale (Nationalist struggler), in the year 1899. It is ranked as the best college (1st position) for Arts, by Indian Today in 2020. Being recognized by the UGC, it is affiliated with the Delhi University. One need to score merit in class 12 and meet their eligibility criteria for admission into the BA Economics Honours program.
9) Madras Christian College, MCC Chennai
Madras Christian College was established in the year 1837 and is ranked 5th in the overall category by India Today in 2020. MCC Chennai is also accredited by grade “A+” by NAAC. For admission into the Bachelor of Arts in Economics, one needs to clear the merit criteria, which is usually followed by a personal interview. MCC serves as a private autonomous college, affiliated with the Madras University.
