National Council for Teacher Education is referred to as NCTE. It is a statutory organisation of the Indian government that was established in 1993 by an act of parliament. In terms of teacher education, NCTE is in charge of developing and carrying out the National Policy on Education (NPE). Institutions in India that train teachers are also recognised by NCTE.

The National Council, State Boards of Teacher Education, and Regional Committees make up the three levels of NCTE’s organisational structure. The National Council, which is NCTE’s supreme body, is in charge of establishing and coordinating the organization’s general policy. The NCTE’s policies must be put into practise at the state level by the State Boards of Teacher Education. The Regional Committees are in charge of assisting and directing teacher training programmes in their particular regions.

An Act of Parliament passed in 1993 established the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a statutory organisation of the Indian government. In terms of teacher education, NCTE is in charge of developing and carrying out the National Policy on Education (NPE). Institutions in India that train teachers are also recognised by NCTE.

NCTE has the following objectives:

General Requirements for NCTE Programmes

The minimum eligibility criteria for NCTE are as follows:

  • For B.Ed. programs, candidates must have a 10+2 (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks in aggregate.
  • For M.Ed. programs, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks in aggregate.
  • For PhD programs in education, candidates must have a Master’s degree in Education with at least 55% marks in aggregate.

The NCTE also reserves 15% of seats in all its teacher education programs for candidates from the Scheduled Castes (SC), the Scheduled Tribes (ST), the Other Backward Classes (OBC), and the Persons with Disabilities (PwD). The NCTE also has a provision for lateral entry into B.Ed. programs. This means that candidates who already have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline can apply for a B.Ed. program without having to complete the 10+2 (or equivalent) level again.

The NCTE also has a provision for lateral entry into M.Ed. programs. This means that candidates who already have a Master’s degree in any discipline can apply for an M.Ed. program without having to complete the Bachelor’s level again.

The lateral entry criteria for M.Ed. programs are as follows:

  • Candidates must have a Master’s degree with at least 50% marks in aggregate.
  • Candidates must have passed the NET or SET.
  • Candidates must have a valid Teaching Aptitude Test (TAT) score.
