In the first tier of the KAS preliminary exam consists of two papers. Paper-I (GS) general studies of total 150 marks and Paper II optional subjects of total 300 marks. In General studies, we cover Indian Culture and History of Modern India, Geography of India, India and the World, Current National issues and the Constitution of India and Indian Polity, and topics of social relevance, India’s Economic Interaction with the World, International Affairs and Institutions, Developments in the Field of Science & Technology, IT and space) Statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams.

Paper II comprise of optional subjects depend on whatever you choose like Botany, Chemistry, Agriculture, Civil Engineering, Commerce, Economics, Geography, Geology, Electrical Engineering, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Indian History, Law, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Mechanical Engineering, Psychology, Public Administration , Sociology, Statistics, Zoology Candidates can also have option to choose Literature of one of these following languages:

English, Hindi, Kashmiri, Arabic, Dogri, Persian, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Urdu. While in selection of Jammu and Kashmir Police Service, candidates should be a local resident of the State. Three year age relaxation in the case of Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during fighting with any foreign country or in any terrorism area. Candidates who belonging to Scheduled Tribes/ Scheduled Castes / Socially and Educationally Backward Classes are getting advantage of age relaxation limit is 37 years.
