As such there are a lot of options available right from certificates to a degree program.
Any 12th pass student is eligible to pursue a degree in animation. Or one could pursue a designing degree and specialise in animation. But eligibility for designing course is an entrance exam.
Please note there are private institutes that provides certification in animation, which you could pursue along with any other degree.
As an animator, you have opportunity in any industry you could think of not only media. Every organization to promote their product requires an animator. At the sametime you could work as a freelancer and work as a consultant

Career in Animation has a bright future since animation has now not remained only for entertainment purposes but also for educational purposes.
It would be better if you do formal courses in animation. However before that, I would recommend you if you are not a graduate, to do Bachelors in Fine Arts (BFA). This under graduate degree course will help you understand all the aspects of designing, which are essential for animation also. You can choose specialisation in animation also later in the course.
After BFA, you can do a short term course in advanced animation techniques, Maya, etc. which are required by advertising agencies. The payment levels are also high in this industry however it is hectic work where lot of deadlines are to be met.
