Choice between a post MBA sales job in electric goods sector company v/s insurance sector company ?

I did BTech in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from IP Univ , Delhi . Then worked as a Systems Engineer in Infosys for 2 years . But somehow realized that these things didn't really suit my interests , so I decided to pursue MBA. Since I am good with my communication skills and understand marketing concepts well , I was very sure that MBA in marketing is the right way for me. I just finished MBA from LBS , Delhi . I joined a company which manufactures and sells electrical goods , but the pay is very less ( almost the same as I was earning before MBA ) . I also have a call from an insurance sector company which pays much better , but I have been told by many that insurance sales are tough . Considering that I am a bit tied up financially , I am inclined towards the latter . Is my inclination justified ?

Hello My Dear Career Aspirant,

Firstly reading your detailed query made me happy since more the detailed query, more the clarity for we experts to guide you appropriately.

I am glad and thank ful to you for approaching CareerGuide for seeking guidance and advice for your career concern.

Marketing field interests you:

From your query I understand that despite of graduating as an Engineer in Electrical and Electronics branch, you are inclined to pursue a career in marketing and there fore you opted for MBA Marketing and further you completed it as well. Completing your MBA is very good and I would like to congratulate you on this!

Now that you have decided to leave your engineering field and pursue your career for long term in the field of marketing, lets talk about that only.

My friend, I would like you to understand that an MBA always gives more salary is a great myth. Only those how manage to pass out from Top 10 BSchools in India manage to get more salary since they are worth it. Not all MBA are worth and looking at the current scenario of MBAs, where their supply is much much more than the required demand, their value definitely will fall.

Your experience in Infosys will not be counted and considered at all in the marketing field and there fore the companies are right in paying you the same salary which you were getting in Infosys. This is because you are considered as a fresher in the marketing sector.

Insurance:

Your friend is right that selling insurance is tough since the product itself does not exist but gets into existence in the future when maturity of the insurance product takes place. There fore convincing people for buying insurance products is tough and not easy as compared to other services or products.

I would suggest you to look for jobs in rising and stable sectors like the below:

Though you are financially tied up (actually every body is), I would suggest you to take a cautious decision, since though insurance companies give more incentive, it is given since due to the fact that insurance selling is not simple.

Best Luck.
