R & AW is an independent body it has the lot of power to select candidates as they wish to for a candidate, sometime R & AW recruiting their agents and officers from different government sector like Army, IPS, IB, IAS, CBI, or directly from different Institutes/ Universities (For Special works). Current R & AW chief are P K Hormis Tharakan, belong from 1968 IPS batch and was Directorate General of Police (DGP). And previous R & AW chief was Mr. K. C. Verma, he was the chief of the Intelligence Bureau. Duration is likely to be changed soon. Now all, the thing would be clear to you, that there is no direct recruitment policy for it like as IAS, IPS, etc. is & AW service is known as RAS (Research and Analysis Service). The whole duration of R & AW agent, officers is in between 2 to 5 years, after that they are free to go back to their previous position as an IAS officer, IPS officer, etc. or they are also allowed to get high administrative and executive position in MNC's If you want to join or & AW directly then I have two strategy coming in my mind. R & AW recruiting directly through SSC (Staff Selection Commission), which is an exam called DFO (Deputy Field officers) under cabinet secretary, there you can participate. And as we know cabinet secretary is also an IAS officer qualified, as because cabinet secretary is the reputed position of IAS, They are who handles the PM's office. Deputy Field Officers (DFO) is appointed directly at the junior levels and then the junior field officers and senior field officers. Deputy Field Officers-DFO is recruited for General Duty (GO), telecom person, technical person and economical duties of R&AW agency. Other than GO, the rest is promoted to Field Officer and then Resident Officers in their respective duty. Field officers and senior field officer (equivalent OT DSP) are appointed on seniority. You required the minimum work experience of eight years as a DFO to be getting promoted to the next level that is a FO. Deputy Field Officers get promotion after minimum five years for the next level senior field officer (SFO) rank. Abroad postings are only for FO, and SFO, General Duty, secretary, deputy secretary, under, director, additional and joint secretary, secretary (whole R&AW agency is controlled by these officers’ means by an IAS officer. The Candidates who have done a top in IAS exams are invited by Research and Analysis Services to join them. Procedure of RAS is not so easy for selection. Research and Analysis Services organize its own entrance exam, even more difficult than IAS exam, followed by Personal interview etc.

There are no separate exams conducted for RAW. Recruitment in RAW is generally secret and only the government home ministry knows it.
Generally officers from IPS cadre, CID, CBI are taken up based on their merit and seniority to work for RAW.
