Hello My Dear...

A Civil Engineer asking for diversification in career, sounds interesting. I am happy that you approached CareerGuide for seeking guidance and information about your wonderful and well thought query. By diversification I will guide you in two ways: I wil suggest you diversification in your core area of civil engineering and another diversification outside your core area of civil engineering.

Firstly I will tell you how you can diversify your career being remained in your core civil engineering area:

I would like to tell you that today the construction and infrastructure industry is requiring skilled man power in the area of Construction Project Management. Construction Project Management is not taught in Civil Engineering and needs to be learnt at the masters or post graduate level.

One of the Institutes of repute known as Samvit School of Infrastructure Business which is based at Pune offers tow year full time placement oriented PGD in Infrastructure Business focused on Civil Engineers and Construction Project Management. www.samvitinfra.edu.in

This is one area where there is huge shortage of skilled man power especially of Civil and Mechanical Engineers. I would recommend you to diversify in this since after you learn this, you will not be into execution but into the management role of the construction business, which is the need of the hour. This diversification is an apt one rather than diversifying outside the cicil engineering field.

Secondly, if you wish to diversify outside the field of civil engineering altogether, then an MBA course will be god for you. But then also think that why did you spend four years in civil engineering??? Since after you do an MBA you wont be related to your graduation field and may be working in altogether different field like finance, marketing, hr, operations or international business - these are not at all related to civil engineering by any angle.

Kindly take an informed decision and looking at the need of civil engineer in construction industry who know construction project management, I would strongly recommend you to remain connected to your core civil engineering field and excel in it.

Best Luck
