Hi Surya,

Congratulations dear.

Looks like from your question, you are interested in Biology as a major in the future.

You have quite a lot of options, but before that I would request you to undergo an Aptitude tests to know your potentials and likings and based on that selecting a career will help you in the long run.

Some of the options you have are:

  • B.Sc Botany: Botany is the scientific study of plants. As a result, we have an increase in supply of medicines, foods, fibers, building materials, and other plant products. Conservationists use botanical knowledge to help manage parks, forests, range lands, and wilderness areas. Public health and environmental protection professionals depend on their understanding of plant science to help solve pollution problems.
  • B.Sc Biotechnology: Bio-Technology is a research oriented science, a combination of Biology and Technology. It covers a wide variety of subjects like Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, Chemistry and Engineering and is also concerned with many other subjects like Health and Medicine, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Cropping system and Crop Management, Ecology, Cell Biology, Soil science and Soil Conservation, Bio-statistics, Plant Physiology, Seed Technology etc. Used for developing various medicines, vaccines and diagnostics, increasing productivity, improving energy production and conservation. Biotechnology's intervention in the area of animal husbandry has improved animal breeding. It also helps to improve the quality of seeds, insecticides and fertilizers. Environmental biotechnology helps for pollution control and waste management.
  • B.Sc Microbiology: Linking how microbes affect human health and environment and finding solutions to it.
  • B.Sc Biomedical Sciences:Biomedical scientists carry out a range of laboratory and scientific tests to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Many hospital departments could not function without them, including operating theatres and accident and emergency (A&E) departments.
  • B.Sc Bioinformatics: Storing or filing of Research data with the help of technology and coding is the job of a bioinformatic graduate. Bioinformaticians need to perform two critical roles: develop IT tools embodying novel algorithms and analytical techniques, and apply existing tools to achieve new insights into molecular biology. However, you must remember that although powerful and highly specialised in itself, bioinformatics is only a part of biotechnology. Getting a DNA sequence coding for a new protein does not automatically make it useful. Unless this information is converted into useful processes and products, it serves no purpose
  • Genetics: Genetics is the study of genes, their functions, and their effects.
  • Forensic Sciences: a forensic scientist works in close coordination to find out evidence and show the same to courts and helps in solving the case with legally acceptable evidence.

Apart from the fields alone in Biology, I am sure you have had a combination of Physics, chemistry and Math.

So you can also opt for:
Pharmacy: Pharmacists are the ones who are into manufacturing of medicines. Here you would have to clear an entrance exam and then only are you eligible to pursue this 4 years degree course.

In-case if you have opted for Math as a subject and are seemingly good, you could opt for either
B.ScIT: Mainly related to hardware and networking or
BCA: Mostly related to hardware and software application.

Hope this helps.

Wish you good luck...........

Dear Aspirant,

Biology is an exciting as well in demand field.

Upcoming areas in Biology related fields are:

Medicine, Pharmacy, Biological Scientists, Genetic Scientists, Nutritionists & Dieticians, Food Technology, Forensic Science, Agriculture, Horticulture, Bio-technology, Food Processing, Virology, Research Labs

Further I would suggest you to go Ideal Career Test from MCG which will help you understand yourself in respect of your strengths, weaknesses, emotional quotient, etc. and will exactly tell you which career is ideal for you.
You can then call counsellors to discuss.

Best wishes!
