Hello there,

Thank you very much for choosing CareerGuide and writing to us. I appreciate your interest in Counselling services and I am glad to be able to guide you through your query today. It takes me immense pleasure to advice you on this query because, you are more inclined to my interest level. I did a BTech and got diverted to the Psychology route. I now specialise in gender psychology, organizational psychology and industrial psychology by profession. I also completed a Diploma course in counselling psychology and I am practicing as a Counsellor part time. Hope you can be relaxed to have seen me as a living example, who got diverted to Psychology studies after a BTech degree.
Before we go on, I would like to know what was your background in BTech degree. If you have done a BTech related to science like the Biotechnology, you may be considered by certain institutes in India for a Masters in Psychology but please be aware that not all universities are flexible with accepting students from unrelated background. To do a course in Counselling Psychology, you may have to do a Masters in Psychology or Applied Psychology and choose Counselling Psychology module as your main specialization. It is very important to have a degree in Psychology, if you are willing to build up a career in this line. So this admits, you will have to register at a college that offers MA Psychology/ Applied Psychology with Counselling Psychology as one of the main electives in the degree.
To strengthen your career, you could do two more things. One, do an internship under a counsellor and earn a certificate. You may approach well established counsellors in your city and could do a training for a minimum of 3-6 months. This also includes where you want to specialise as counselling Psychology is variant including School counselling, adult counselling, anti-behavioural counselling, educational counselling, career counselling, marriage or relationship counselling, rehabilitation counselling and many. As you have said you are interested in counselling, you need to narrow down your interest into one specific interest. To help you better, please see the attached picture.

Private Questions

The above picture will be able to brief you on the types of jobs and sectors you could work with the related specializations.
And yes, you can do some distance course from IGNOU in Counselling, if you would like to. It will certainly strengthen your application. But be informed, it is essential to have some internship/ practical experience while you are studying your degree. Employers really dont care of you have studied BTech or Psychology at the basic level. All they would bother is, if you have developed and could demonstrate the necessary counselling skills in practice.
Hope this helps. My best wishes to you.
