The aim of veterinary education is to produce veterinarians capable ofusingtheir skills to improve association of humans and animals by making the later free from their suffering and disease.



The primary role of a veterinarian is prevention of diseases not only among animals but also to stop diseases from being transmitted from animal to mankind or vice versa. Food/ feed , general public safety, animal health and welfare, environmenthygieneetc are his otherresponsibility



To excel as veterinarian one needs to have genuine love for animals, aptitude andinterestin biological sciences, ability to instill confidence in animals,excellentpower of observation,adaptability, good physical stamina and ability to work in team. The jobprospectsof veterinarian is as follows:-




Hospitals- Veterinarian surgeons attached to veterinary hospitals in cities may find themselves handling mainly domestic pets. But the government postings could also be in rural areas where responsibilities extend to cattle , sheep, goats, horses, poultry etc.



Dairy Sector- The veterinarian doctors employed by the dairy sector work at ensuring increasing yields in milk production and also the health and breeding of dairy cattle.




Wildlife and Environment- Vets play an important role in captive breeding of wild animals, particularly those feared to be getting extinct.



Pharmaceutical Companies- Veterinarian are employed in the pharmaceutical companies where they handle the production of vaccines or the development of animal feeds and fertilizers.



Extension Officers- Veterinary doctors are required for extension programmes, i.e they educate and encourage livestock farmers to build up the quality of their animal stock. They also advise on animal farm management and animal health problem.



Private Practice- Veterinary doctors in urban areas can set up private practice to deal mainly with small or domestic animals.
