Hi ! Can you elaborate on a list of courses that can help me in cancer diagnostics ..like being able to detect cancer and the like.. I would also like to know of the careers that the courses can offer and its scope. I am looking for a job oriented course more than a research based course or career. Dear Sheikha, thanks for putting up your query here.

Cancer is diagnosed by an expert who examine cell or tissue samples. In some cases, tests done on the cells' proteins, DNA, and RNA can help diagnose cancer. For diagnosis, biopsies and cytology tests are used.

A biopsy is a sample of tissue taken from the body in order to examine it more closely. Cytology is concerned with the structure and function of cells. I do not know you qualification right now so it is difficult for me to suggest specific courses. However, courses in the area of microbiology, medical oncology, and cytology will be helpful for you to specialize in cancer diagnosis.

I would suggest you to browse through following institutes and their courses.
List of courses in cancer diagnostics:
Institute of Cytology and Preventive Oncology (ICPO), Noida
Indian Institute of Technology - Mumbai, Maharashtra
Manipal Institute of Communication - Manipal, Karnataka
Jamia Millia Islamia - New Delhi, Delhi
Institute of Business Studies and Research (IBSAR) - Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra
University Of Delhi - New Delhi, Delhi
Post Graduate College of Science - Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh
Berhampur University - Berhampur, Orissa
Maris Stella College - Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
CMC Vellore
St.JOhn's Bangalore
SRMC Chennai

Your second query was to know careers that the courses can offer and its scope. Since there are different kind of courses (graduate, post-graduate, and certificate), it is imperative for me to know which level of courses are best fit for you and I can share its scope.

Hope this information is useful. If you still have queries, feel free to write back with details about your education background so that I can provide detailed information you seek.

Best Wishes,

Hi Sheikha,

I remember, you asking about Molecular Diagnostics and Cytogenetics.

Though I would request you to go back and read those answers, but never-the-less in short, I would say that in terms of Research into cancer diagnostics, Cytogenetics is a good specialization.

Since they are the ones who study the genetic disorders and chromosomal correlation to get the answer to what causes cancer.

Then steps in the molecular diagnostic tools, which once the research is done, they study it in laboratory setup of samples that comes to the diagnostic centre for people who can be affected as suggested by the physician.

As suggested, Cytogenetics are available at the masters level either as an M.Sc or a PG Diploma course.

Mostly this is a 24/7 Research oriented job, whereby you would be required to study samples in a laboratory set-up and write Research papers on it.

Since you have mentioned, job oriented and less research job, then Molecular diagnostic is a better option,
Since Molecular diagnostic is more of studying the samples which comes in for diagnosis at the diagnostic centre as suggested by the physician. They are generally found in the diagnostic centres either hospitals or private centres.

Again Molecular diagnostic is available at the masters level, after a genetic undergraduate study.

Hope this helps.

Wish you good luck....
