Hello Aravind,

Well, interest is one of the aspects that contributes to a successful career. Others include the right aptitude, skills set , personality traits etc. Please evaluate your self among these lines before you decide a transition. Do you feel you have an acute eye for details, loads of imagination and patience? A lots of creativity and personal and technical innovation ? A sort of perfectionist? And a lot more.....Also I would recommend you take the psychometric assessment services provided by careerguide.com , to know your inherent potential and traits, after which you can make an informed career decision.
After that our experts will discuss the report with you and help you decide according ly.
Now, regarding Design, you need in depth knowledge and mastery of CAD computer aided designing software. This will give you the basic knowledge about design, plus there are other structural design softwares that are different for each domain, such as 3D modeling, Solidage tools etc. ... That is per the corporate choice. This will help you to start with R&D design .
Further, in Aerospace engineering, you will be responsible for designing the structure of what ever craft it is! You can enter into this after you complete Masters degree. There are very good colleges in India that provide courses in aerospace engineering. Please go through the following links to find further information:

All the best...
Dear Aspirant,
I completely agree with the expert Ms. Halima Sadiya.
How and why did you feel to go to altogether different field to which you are not at all related and qualified? You did Production Engineering, but doing job in Software company and now wish to go to Aerospace engineering.
My dear aspirant, please do not take such awkward decisions and ruin your career.
Find out exactly what is that which is making you unhappy in your current job and industry. If the reason is genuine, then there are other career options to be happy. But if the reason is that you are not employable then you should concentrate on increasing and improving and enhancing your knowledge, domain skills and employability skills to remain in the industry as a good performer.
For R & D in Aerospace Engineering you definitely to be very much qualified as an Engineer. Will you be ready to do Aerospace Engineering right from scratch.?
I sincerely request you to undergo Ideal Career Test available on CareerGuide.com which is a psychometric test which will scientifically tell you where your career lies.
Best wishes
Thanks for writing to www.careerguide.com!
Well, you want to switch your field. My colleagues have rightly answered your query so I won't repeat what they have mentioned. I am just sharing my perspective that may helpful to you to take informed career decision about career change. My answer is divided in three sections:
Reflective questions to review your career decisions
Take career assessment from www.careerguide.com
3.Pathways to switch to aerospace engineering
I have few reflective questions that may help you take informed career decision and suggest
What made you work in IT field when you have degree in production engineering? What made you think to change engineering branch after work experience?Isnt it viable to do further study in your current area of work (I.e. IT)?Will you afford take up another two years of study in aerospace engineering as degree in the field is mandatory to become aerospace engineer?Career change is very big decision, are you sure about career change and ready to take risk? Career transition is risky if you take decision impulsively.
Since you want to make career in engineering field only, I would reccomend to take up Engineering Branch Selector Test at www.career guide.com. It will help you understand potential engineering branch based on your aptitute and interest. This will help you select between Aerospace engineering, IT or other engineering field.
You can take Ideal Career Test as well if you are not clear about your career field. Based on aptitude, interest and personality test, ideal career test will suggest potential career field for you.
As per your query, I recommend engineering branch selector test. However, you are the best person to decide, which one is most suitable career assessment based on your need.
Take decision based on your answer to reflective questions, suggestions provided by my colleagues at www.career guide.com and career assessment.
I would also suggest you to talk with Professor of aerospace engineering and aerospace engineer or someone working in the field of aerospace engineering. They will provide you important insights about aerospace engineering field, its demand and challenges.
If you are clear about changing your engineering field after reflections and career assessment results, you can definately go ahead with changing engineering field. You can do MTech / MDes in Aerospace Engineering. You need GATE score. GATE Paper must be Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
Since you are interested in R&D, you can do PhD in the field. Doctoral research will broaden career scope and will add value to your work.
Following Institute offer aerospace engineering course in india:
IIT, Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur, MadrasIISc, BangaloreIIST
Hope this perspective is helpful for you and add value to what other experts have suggested. If you still have query, feel free to write back to us.
Best Wishes for bright career,Apurva kumar Pandya, PhD
