Dear aspirant

Civil Engineer

Thank you for approaching counsellors at meracareerguide. I appreciate your interest in environmental planning. Yes you can absolutely pursue this career with out any doubt. First of all please understand that being a girl has no bar on education or career. It is completely dependent on the individual mindset. So i would sincerely say that please feel free to pursue anything that you want. And yes i can understand that you are not a technical lover. If this is your strong reason to say no for core civil engineering then as you said i completely support your decision to pursue environmental planning. In fact you can also choose to study environmental engineering. This is not a pure technical subject but is more or less similar to environmental planning only.

To study MSc environmental planning or MTech Environmental management/ engineering management would be an ideal choice for you. Completing this masters course, you can expect for a good pay start of more than 4.2lakh per annum if you are a fresher without any work experience and if you have a minimum of two year work experience already and then have studied a masters then a pay of 5.5lakh per annum is very possible. This subject is highly recognised by construction and building materials manufacturing industries. You can find jobs like L&T India, a company that is very famous for recruiting environmental planning and environmental engineering subjects. Also studying from a top university also matters your job placement opportunities and pay structure If you graduate from a very esteemed institution, you can expect for a reasonable pay to start your career. so give importance to choose the right college too.

Some of the good colleges in India offering this degree are
  • Indian institute of technology Bombay
  • IIT Kharagpur
  • IIT Kanpur
  • IIT Madras
  • IIT Roorkee
  • Pune university
  • Amrita university Coimbatore and Bangalore
  • Vellore institute of technology Vellore Tamilnadu
  • SRM University Kattangalathur Chennai
  • RVCE college Bangalore
  • Doon university
  • Bharathiya Vidyapeeth

If you want to study at IIT for the masters then you should appear of GATE entrance exam. If you secure a top rank in Gate, you have good chances in getting placed at any of the IIT schools. If you do not want to study at Gate, then you should at least depend upon the entrance test run by the individual university. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. And yes, be very glad that you have chosen the right stream. All the best for your studies and career.

Hello My Dear Civil Engineer,

Environmental Planning is a good option, however I would like to make you aware of another field where girl Civil Engineers can best fit it. The field is of Construction Project Management. Construction Project Management involves planning, supply chain management, quality control, costing, finance, labour management, apart from the civil and on site work.

If you do a full time course like which is available with Samvit School of Infrastructure Business at Pune, you will have an opportunity to work with companies like Larsen & Tourbo in their planning, forecasting, departments. www.samvitinfra.edu.in. Admissions for their fourth batch are currently open and I think you should not waste this golden opportunity.

By learning Construction Project Management, you are taught the business management side of the construction industry and since you are a Civil Engineer, your technical skills will be of immense help if you combine them with construction business management knowledge.

Girls in construction management are very much taken up for non-site work and let me tell you that there is huge work that happens off-the-site and which requires management skills to perform it.

In terms of pay, today the construction industry is requiring huge number of professionals in construction project management and freshers with a PG course in construction management gives them a starting salary of Rs. 3.50 lakhs per annum. This is way ahaed and above a fresh and just a civil engineer.

I have suggested you to do this course, since you haveare not interested in site work as full time job.

All the Best
