I am currently studying in class 12 non medical with computer science. I am confused a little bit about which engineering branch to choose?

My preferred branch is computer science but am not sure about my passion interests . I want to know what my life would become after getting a job because now I am in the comfort zone so I want to know about the situation I would have to face the challenges I would get and the environment in which I would have to live after getting a job

Dear Ridham,

It is good for now at least that you are pursuing your subject interests. It is also almost decided that you are going to pursue your higher studies in engineering and most probably in computer engineering. Now let me tell you that doing a course in engineering does not necessarily guarantee a career in the same field. We are human beings and our interests keep on changing with time, awareness and opportunities.

Therefore, at this time, you should not worry about your future passion, interest and all. Yes the concerns of job, challenge and environments could be justified. Lets first try to select a branch. As per your present interests and passion, I would advice you to opt Computer Engineering. It is a very good branch, highly paid, having great placement opportunities in fortune companies, comfortable work environment and demands very less physical work.. Today, most of the engineering students from all of the branches (weather it is computer, electrical, ECE or mechanical) are picked by software companies. If you have core interests in computer science, you can make your career in R&D (core engineering) rather than software development (application engineering) which is even greater in terms of work environment and pay package. Even you can go for higher studies abroad for MS or PhD. OR from IISc/IITs for a deeper career in R&D.

Further, after graduation, if you think that you have no more passion in computers, then there are lots of other options. You can switch to MBA (CAT/GMAT) for a career in management. Or you can for CFA for a career in investment banking and financial analysis. Or you can opt for preparing and getting into Indian Civil Services (IAS/IPS/IFS/IRS etc). Or you can do higher studies in any of the subject of your interest and settle into a career in academics (teaching in university/college)

So, don't worry about future interests. just focus on your current interests and give your best. Just decide what you really want to do and go.... The rest will be taken care by the destiny.
