Dear aspirant

Thank you very much for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com I can actually appreciate you for one point, you tend to have explored so much, and not just little. You have viewed your career options with a broad lens and may be observed and followed what ever has been happening around you. It is a good way to actually develops one's self analysis but it is also a bad thing because consuming too many options into the mind will actually deter you from your focus point. Hence i really need you to focus on one career point and rather not look at every options to check if this will work or that will work for you.

To go first, you are highly advised to do a Online Psychometric Career Assessment Test that is available on this website CareerGuide.com. This test will help you understand your personality, analyse your plus and minus and may also help you understand what sort of career is suitable for you. Taking the test, you will achieve better clarity and it will certainly help you filter out unwanted options and help you go on the right path. So please with no delay take the test from this website.

Next, a career. I highly recommend you to go into a job soon after you complete the BSc Computer science course. You said you are in your second year and you have one more year to finish the course. This is the best period for college students to do summer training/ mini projects or internships. I highly recommend you to do an internship at any company for minimum 3-6 months during your final year. In fact you can club this project with your final year project. You will also get paid for the internship every month and receive a certificate. This certificate will help you stand out among the other BSc pass outs of your year. Employers will also prefer to recruit you as you will go to them with some minimum work experience. So try to choose a right company for the internship. You can highly depend on the start ups companies. They have plenty of offers for interns and they will also accept you for full time job after your graduation. This will increase your chances for full time job. Studying a degree and getting a good percentage will be not sufficient for employers to get convinced on your profile, as every body does the same job. Right? So you should see how you are efficient, different and capable compared to your peers who also pass out in the same year. Having at least one or two mini projects/ internships on your CV will pull you out of the crowd. So please concentrate on looking for internships this year or next year and this will give you the red carpet for job after graduation.

Added to this i also advice you to improve on your communication skills. Employers highly get impressed with students with good communication skills, negotiation skills and if you could prove it to them at the interview, you are again at a higher chance of being hired for the job. You can also use freshers website to search for jobs and internships. Add your CV and create a profile on Naukri( www.naukri.com), Monster ( www.monsterindia.com/), Shine ( www.shine.com/), Times job ( www.timesjobs.com/) Employers will call you to request for an interview.

All the best

Hello

Thank you for choosing CareerGuide.com and writing to us.

I can very well relate myself to your confusion as I had all these options running in my mind while I was at college that you have stated here. I am actually amazed to see you having a variety of options in hand, and not just one or two. From your question, I understand you are studying a B.Sc degree currently and you have a year more to finish it.

First, I highly acknowledge the counselling given by our counsellor Gomathi here. Completing a degree alone is not sufficient for convincing an employer. Considering the job demands in the present world, employers always are tend to be very choosy. They only select the best from the lot. And these best are usually with some added qualifications that most of them will not have on their resume. I can list on some extra things you can do to add more weight to your job application.

  • Mini projects/ summer project: You can contact your professor at University to request them to give you a mini project or summer project to handle by yourself. Professors will usually have many projects in hand and if you can approach them they can offer you a project that suits you.
  • Write papers/ research publications: If you are interested in researching on any field of subject, please feel free to do it. And take the support of your professor. You can write a research paper on this and also publish it to top journals. Else you can also present your paper at national or state level seminars and symposiums. Doing so, you will be awarded a certificate and they are highly valued by employers.
  • Create a blog: this is a cost free add on skill. If you cannot write a paper or publish for some reasons, the best way is to start a blog and write something that is interested to you in the field of computer science. You can take photos on something that you designed/ developed and mention the blog link on your resume. This highly attracts employers and they will be interested in hiring you.
  • Add some certificate courses: Try to study some evening/ weekend courses like ethical hacking, multimedia, website design and development. Completing the courses mention them on your CV. This certainly adds some extra weight to your job application.

Private Questions

With all these above mentioned ways, you can increase your opportunities for getting selected in a full time job soon after your graduation. I recommend you to join in a job and then simultaneously think of studying any course that you may be interested. You can choose to study part time/ distance/ weekend. Once you get a job, you will be more independent with your thinking and you will achieve some clarity in understanding on what really interests you. WHile you are in job, you can also parallely try to prepare for TNPCEE exams for the IAS. I highly recommend you to take a job soon after BSc and then do anything that comes your way. In case you wanted to do an MBA after 2-3 years of work experience, it is a very good opportunity. Because an MBA with prior work experience is more valued than an MBA with no work experience. Beyond all, getting a job as a fresher is relatively easy than an experienced. As a fresher you can knock on anywhere but as an experienced you can only try for jobs where you are specialised. So try getting a job as soon as possible after your BSc and it will help you a lot on the long run.

All the best.
