Hello there

Thank you very much for approaching counsellors at Mera career guide. Becoming a professor is a great ambition as it carries a lot of responsibility with it compared to any other profession. Before I go into the counselling topic, please let me introduce myself. I am Gomathi and i am into this counselling industry since 23 years now. I specialise in guidance and counselling for education choice and career routes, and i am also the Managing Director of GV Counselling group based in Bangalore and Chennai. So lets move into your topic now.

To become a professor a doctorate qualification is necessary that is a PhD degree. Without this degree one cannot be qualified to work as a professor directly at universities and colleges. I will explain how to get this PhD degree first.
  • You need to pass 10th class with a minimum first class
  • Then pass 12th class with a minimum class
  • Then pass a basic bachelors degree with a minimum first class. This Bachelors degree could be either a three year bachelors like BA/ BSc or a four year bachelors like BENG/ BTECH. As you are considering to be a professor of Auto mobile engineering, you need to study a BENG/ BTECH Auto mobile engineering. If you are from reserved category like the SC/ST category then you should have a minimum 55% pass mark but if you are not from reservation category then a minimum 60% is required. Please be aware that every Indian considering to study a PhD needs to follow this +10+2+3 route or +10+2+4 route as this is the basic eligibility criteria for applying for a Phd. In case you have not studied 10th or 12th class or even the Bachelors degree, you cannot be eligible to apply for a PhD.
  • Next you should pass a Masters degree like the MENG/ MTECH in Auto mobile engineering and also obtain a minimum first class as pass mark.
  • You are almost ready to apply for a PhD now. But it does require one more test to send your PhD application. If you are willing to study a PhD at IIT institutes, you should write GATE exam and then attach the scores with your academic scores and send it. If you are focusing universities other than IIT, then you need to write and pass the UGC-NET exam. If you want scholarship/ monthly stipend then you should also pass the UGC-JRF. With these scores you can apply and study a PhD. Completing the Phd you are qualified to work as a Professor at universities.

All the very best
