Hello there

Thank you very much for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com and i take immense pleasure in guiding you through your query today. before we go into teh topic, please let me introduce myself. I am Gomathi and I am teh Managing Director of GV Counselling group based in Bangalore. I am into this counselling profession for over 23 years now and i specialise counselling students and other people on career and educational guidance. So lets go into our query now.

I see your interest into becoming a professor in metallurgical engineering. First of all hats off for two reasons. First, to think of becoming a professor as it is an important, crucial responsible role for the society and secondly, considering a lucrative sub metallurgical engg.

To become a professor, one needs to have done a PhD degree as this is the only qualification that will let you conduct teaching and research at colleges and universities. To get a phd, please see the following:

  • Pass a tenth class with min first class
  • pass twelfth class with min first class
  • Pass a four year or three year bachelor degree with a min first class. This three year bachelor degree could be either BA BSc or a four year bachelor degree could be BE BTech. But as you are wanting to be a prof of metallurgical engg, i suggest you study a four year metallurgical engg or mecahnical engg or chemical engg degree.
  • Completing this bachelor, you can consider doing a masters in teh same qualification. You are hence required to do a two year master in metallurgical engg.
  • With your 10th 12th bachelor and masters scores you are almost ready to apply to universities for a phD. But before that plaese wait. you are required to do GATE test if you want to study PhD in IIT institutes or UGC-NET & UGC-JRF outside IIT institutes. UGC Net qualifies for for applying to a phd and UGC-JRF qualifies you for monthly stipend while doing a phd degree all three years of duration.
  • You can also obtain a UGC LEC, CSIR score to strengthen your PhD application.
with this phd you can work as an asssitant professor initially in schools and colleges. After few years like preferably 2-3 years ytou will be promoted as a profesosr. Please write back for further clarification.
