There are few differences in PGDM and MBA course. The very first thing as the term PGDM specifies post graduate diploma in management, it is a ‘diploma’ course and not master’s degree. Hence, a student cannot pursue Ph.D. after PGDM course. Whereas a MBA student can pursue Ph.D. after the course.
MBA course is offered by 'Universities' or the colleges that are affiliated to Universities while PGDM is offered by individual colleges. Curriculum of both the courses is similar. However, one year PGDM cannot be considered as equivalent to regular two year full time MBA course. Two year full time PGDM can be treated as equivalent to regular MBA course.

Good question and it is really very important for the students to know the difference. Such difference in nomenclature has occurred to the boom in management education.
Ms. Deepti has nicely explained the difference, however I would like to add that PGDM has now been considered equivalent to MBA for pursuing PhD by some Universities. Those Universities which are a part of All India Universities (AIU), those PGDMs are equivalent to Masters degree.
However majorly, PGDM is a Diploma and not a Masters degree.
