Food is fundamental of all life processes and so food science and technology are as important for those responsible for providing nutritional and balanced meals in a household or for large catering establishments in hotels, hospitals , canteens etc.

Food technology is associated with the manufacture, preservation, canning and packaging of food products. It is concerned with all types of food- fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, milk, cereals, spice, tea, coffee etc. Food scientists & technologists use chemistry , microbiology , engineering and other sciences to study the principles underlying the processing and deterioration of foods, they analyze food content to determine levels of vitamins, fat , sugar and protein, discover new food sources, research ways to make processed foods safe, palatable and healthful and apply food science knowledge to determine best ways to process , package , preserve , store and distribute food.

Apart from the required qualification, above average intelligence, scientific bent of mind, powers of observation, long concentration span, interest in scientific and technological developments, interest in health and nutrition, long concentration span, strong sense of responsibility , ability to work well on one's own as well as a part of team, ability to communicate with people at all levelsare useful skills for aspiring food technologists.
