Hi Pallavi,

Interesting question and an interesting choice if at all you are interested in it.

To pursue a career in Genetics engineering, you have two options.
1. A B.Sc in Genetics or
2. B.E In Genetic engineering

In general for a B.Sc degree, you would have to clear 12th science (PCMB). Post that there are entrance exams and then a 3 years course.

For an engineering degree, again post 12th Science, you would have to appear for an entrance exam, an All India based engineering entrance exam, and then pursue a 4 years course.

Genetic engineering, as the name suggests, it is basically modifying an object based on genetic information received. Basically it helps in retaining certain functions good in the generation to the next generation.
It is also helpful in terms of research on certain genetic disorders and cure in terms of genetic values.
A simple example here, is the dog named Dolly, who was genetically fused with certain human intelligence that was muted with canine breeding. So the canine was having potentials related to humans.

Basically it means retaining certain genetic potentials and recreating another being with those potentials.
IVF is a result of genetic engineering.

It is completely a research oriented field.

Hope this answers your query.

Wish you good luck........
