The medical field or medicine is the science which deals with the prevention, diagnosis and curing of diseases. The person who practices medicine is referred to as a medical doctor, physician, medical practitioner or Yoga. A doctor is a life saver for many, hence, this profession is considered to be of a very high stature.

There are several medical institutions in India which provide a degree in medical science. It is not necessary that you will get proper education from all medical colleges. Even if you hold a degree of medicine but lack appropriate knowledge of this field then your career is deemed to go down. For getting admission into prosperous medical colleges an aspiring candidate has to go through immense competition.

There are several courses which are provided in themedical field. The most popular degree course in medicine is MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery). MBBS is the most prominent and designated degree of doctors. This course has always been in heavy demand by the non-medical students after class 12th. Due to anunfortunate boost in diseases and ailments among people, the demand of a medical professional is increasing day by day. One should have qualities like caring nature, self-confidence, good diagnosing ability and good communication skill to become a good doctor.

The good thing about getting MBBS degree is that after completing MBBS one could open their own clinic and practice or even go for a job in the medical field. One can join a private health firm or go for government jobs too. If you don’t want to practice medicine then you may also become a researcher. MBBS is a very rewarding degree.

MBBS is a 5.5-year degree including a one-year compulsory internship. To pursue MBBS you must have passed your class 12th with physics, chemistry, and bio. To get admission in a medical college certain national level entrance exams like NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test), AIIMS MBBS entrance exametc are conducted. Some medical colleges conduct their own entrance exam.

The study of Bachelor of Medicine or Bachelor of Surgery is considered to be the toughest. The study of medicine requires regular and sincere study. It takes great efforts to become a doctor.

Syllabus of MBBS degree (semester wise)-

Total number of semesters-9

  • Semester 1-2 (Pre-clinical): Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology.
  • Semester 3-5 (Para-clinical): Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Clinical postings, OPDs.
  • Semester 6-9 (Clinical): Community medicine and allied subjects (Psychiatry, Dermatology), Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Surgery and allied subjects, Clinical postings.

Internship (12 months)-

  • Medicine- aspecialty of duration 1.5 months.
  • Surgery- Specialty of duration 1.5 months.
  • Rural- aspecialty of duration 3 months.
  • Pediatrics- aspecialty of duration 1 month.
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology- aspecialty of duration 1 month.
  • Casualty- duration 1month
  • Anaesthesiology- duration 15 days
  • Ophthalmology- duration 15 days
  • Elective- duration 2 months

Duration of theinternship is of great importance for becoming a complete doctor as the internship phase gives a hands-on experience of themedical field. Students get stipend during internships.

After successfulcompletion of the semesters and internships, one gets the degree of MBBS. After getting MBBS degree, the person gets the prestigious gift of adding ‘Dr.’ against his/her name.

The salary of MBBS degree holder depends on the amount of knowledge and experience he/she has. The starting salary is about 30k per month. After getting enough experience and good hands in this field, a doctor may earn about 10-15 lakh per annum.
