Here you would have to take a call, which field or subfield are you interested in. Are you interesed in studying the genetic interaction in humans, so that you get answers to genetic disorders or finding out solutions to health issues, or interaction of medicines on genetics or ways to prevent extinction of the plants and animals and saving ecology.

Please note, mostly a genetic engineer works in a laboratory, whether it is in a hospital or pharma company or animal research centre.

Different specializations in Genetics includes:

• Conservation Genetics: They are mainly involved in studying genes to help avoid extinction.
• Medical Genetics: They are mainly involved in genetic studies to diagnose and manage hereditary diseases 
• Molecular Genetics: As the name suggests, moleculr genetics study the genes at a molecular level. It studies  chromosomes and genes of an organism to get an understanding of hereditary, gene mutation etc...
• Immunogenetics: As the name suggest, it explores the relationship between the immune system and genetics. Autoimmune diseases, like type 1 diabetes,  which is caused due to defect in the immune system.
• Ecological Genetics: It is the study of genetics in natural populations.
