The typical day of a Software Engineer or IT Engineer is spent in doing the following activities:

  • Meeting the clients and gathering the requirements. These meetings generally take place at the start of the day.
  • This profession is all about coding. You will work on various programs and write the piece of code to get the desired results.
  • In a product based company you are more likely to work on coding part whereas in a service company you will be more inclined towards IT tools and will use those tools.
  • Testing and developing are two branches of software engineer. If you are in to testing, you work on testing the program designed by the developer. This doesn't require that much mastery in your coding skills. For being a developer, you have to be an absolutely good coder.
  • Software engineers have to work directly with clients sometimes, troubleshooting and removing errors in their systems. This involves quite a lot of travel too.

Information Technology is a domain and not job. So the question "How is the typical day of an Info Technology"is not valid. Yes, your question "How is the day of a Software Enggg" hold good.

This will differ from compan to company based, product top product, and many morefactors such as the processes followed by company. At some places, developers interact directly with end user (customers) while for a product development company (launching new product) - usually you dont work with customers directly. And there are many more differences - you will notice.

If, instead of asking about a day, you ask for a week - it makes mor esense an there are many things which you dont do more than once or twice in a week. Some of the points hae beenn touched upon by Deepak which I will refine further as follows:
- product overview meetings (for the scope of current project)
- discussion on list of tasks allocated to your team
- task allocation to you
- Collect requirements from the boss, lead, or your seniors
- read internal documetns like, SRS, SFS, PRD, design documents, data docs, etc
- desing initial framework on what you be coding and how. there are times when UI is desgined by other team members and you are asked to create that while in a startup company of a small company - you might be the only one desiging UI and then coding.
- coding
- unit teting
- (coding and unit testing - multiple iterations)
- testing with third person to take feedback
- integration of code with main branch (developed by other developers)

- work on the bug reported by testing team
- fix bugs and check the updated code in main brach again

there could be some other tasks like:
- daily reporting
- weekly reporting
- peridioc status update to your senior
- team meetings
- office meetings (related to others tasks - not to your prodcut/project)
- on site visit (to address customer queries)
- learning new tools

If you still have question, you can ask here or use google to search more answer.

All the very best!
