As you have asked, the academic record do matter for any job, specially i government sector. In private organization (not in multinational companies), the mere qualification is enough to get a job.

The job opportunities for a zoologist are huge in government organization such as colleges, universities, research institutions, forest department, governmental laboratories.

The academic qualification is very important, a person holding a doctoral degree in zoology will definitely have an edge over of post graduate person. While getting a job the API index or (Academic Performance Indicator) is required to screen the candidates for the job. Here all personal as well as academic related information are to be furnished.

Such as, your marks from 10th standard to doctoral degree. The good marks will definitely will keep you up in the screening list.

How may research papers you have published or co-authored.

How many review articles, book chapters you have written or co-authored. Any newspaper articles written, articles on transfer of technology.

Is there any edited or published book to your credit.

Number of years of teaching and research experience. Which class (graduate, post graduate, M.Phil or doctoral degree) you have taught.

Number of students (Master degree, M.Phil or doctoral degree) you have supervised.

The number of international or national conference / seminar / symposium/ workshop attended or participated or organized.

The number of faculty development programs attended or organized.

Training attended related to your stream or specialization to upgrade your skills.

Have you ever been involved in course curriculum modification or revision.

Have you done Post Doctoral Fellowship program.

Have you supervised any research project funded by funding agencies.

Other activities such as participation in NCC or NSS or other.

These all things decide the fate of a zoologist to be called for an interview or not. Now a days the screening system is so transparent, that there are very less chances to manipulate the things. The number of personal interview is around 25, rest 75 marks are from the academic record of the person. This practice has been adopted to select the right person with an aptitude and attitude to be a zoologist.

With all my best wishes,

Good Luck...
