USMLE

USMLE is the United States Medical Licensing Exam. It is a medical entrance type exam for getting admission into medical studies in the US. It's quite different and difficult from other medical exams. It is a 3-step exam which aims at thoroughly assessing how well one can apply his/her skills, values, and attitudes to real life, patient-centered scenarios.

The Step 1 of USMLE includes a 1-day based computer exam which includes around 308 multiple-choice questions and spans 8 hours of testing, broken down into seven 1-hour blocks of 40 questions each. For clearing the Step 1 of USMLE, one is required to study thoroughly subjects like genetics, anatomy, behavioral science, nutrition, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, physiology, psychiatry, biostatistics etc.

The Step 2 of USMLE includes 2 sub-steps, namely CK (Clinical Knowledge) and CS (Clinical Skills).

  • CK includes around 355 questions and spans 9 hours of testing, broken down into eight 1-hour blocks of about 45 questions each. For clearing CK, an examinee is required to study subjects like biostatistics, pediatrics, psychiatry, gynecology, obstetrics etc. in a detailed manner.  
  • CS is an examination held in the US It tests the real practical skills of the examinee. Under this exam, an examinee is brought face-to-face with ten simulated patients arranged by the examiners pretending to have specific complaints. The examinees are tested on the basis of their ability to rapidly assess the patients. For clearing CS, an examinee should see a lot of medical videos. One should also read a lot of medical books.

The Step-3 includes a 2-days based computerized examination with around 500 multiple-choice questions, as well as computer-based case simulations (CCS) which aim at assessing one's ability to evaluate history and physical exam information, order diagnostic tests, select initial therapies, and manage the patients. This exam is merely based on practical management. It is conducted in the US only.  For clearing this exam, an examinee is required to be a keen observer, an understanding person having qualities like patience and tolerance. For clearing this exam, one is required to read a lot of medical stuff. One should prepare from Kaplan videos and books as they are considered to be the best for cracking USMLE.
