More about Molecular Diagnotics?

Hi! Would a career in the Molecular Diagnostic Lab require more years of study that becoming a Cytogeneticist? If so, could you give me an in-depth career path on what I should take for my UG and PG to work in a Molecular Diagnostic Lab..? Could you also suggest colleges that provide the courses ? Also, Is cancer research done highly in the Molecular Diagnostics Lab or the Cytogenetics Unit? Thank you for your time! Awaiting your reply!

Hi Sheikha,

Please note that Research or laboratory work is an ongoing process.

As mentioned earlier there is a very very fine difference between Cytogenetics and Molecular diagnostics.
Both are research oriented but Cytogenetics involves dealing with finding the cure to genetic dysfunctioning, whereas Molecular diagnostics, helps us understanding the cause towards a disorder by studying genes or chromosomes.

Both are masters level courses, whereby few University provides an M.Sc program, whereas some provide a Pg Diploma program in Molecular Diagnostics.

The basic qualification remains the same, i.e, a B.Sc in genetics, Life sciences, MBBS, Pharmacy etc.

Dear Sheikha,

Thanks for writing to www.careerguide.com. Hope such conversations are helping you take informed decision.

Meghna Mukherjee has provided detailed answer and I am sure it is helpful. I am adding few important information for your reference.

I believe you are confused about taking up UG course. You may consider taking up BSc in Life Sciences.

After graduation you can do, PG in Molecular Diagnostics or Cytogenetics or Post BSc diploma in Cytogenetics.

Cancer research are done more at Cytogenetic Unit. I would recommend you to talk with Professor from any of the below University/Departments to get more information about the course, researches and admission procedure. Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) regularly organizes training course in Cancer Cytogenetics for Post-graduates.

Cytogenetics Centers in India
1.Veer Narmad South Gujarat University - Surat, Gujarat
2.Hindi Vidya Prachar Samiti`s Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College - Mumbai, Maharashtra
3.Post Graduate College of Science - Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh
4. Cytogenetics Unit, Christian Medical College, Vellore
5. Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH),Mumbai

The Cytogenetic Unit does a greater amount of cancer research. Those interested in learning more about the course, the research, and the admissions process can speak with professors at the universities and departments listed below. On a regular basis, postgraduates can enrol in a Cancer Cytogenetics training course at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH).
