Dear aspirant,

You have a good number of choices regarding your Optional Subject. From Humanities to Engineering and Medical sciences, all sorts of optional subjects have been offered by the UPSC for the Civil Services Examination. But generally Humanities subjects, e.g. Public Administration, Geography, History, etc. are more in numbers and you have fair chances to choose from, according to your comfortability and familiarity with that specific subject. Earlier there used to be two such optional subjects but the pattern got changed in the year 2013 and one optional subject got removed. Now according to the new pattern, the Prelims has two paper – one is GS and another is CSAT- Aptitude Test. The Mains comprise of nine papers having four papers of General Studies, two papers for one optional subject, one essay paper and two language papers. CSAT in the Prelims and Language papers in the Mains are of qualifying nature, the score of which are not counted in their respective stage of exams.

List of Optional Subjects:

There are Twenty-five such subjects to choose from along with a literature of any one of the following languages:

  • Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri,

  • Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri,
  • Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit,

  • English

Guidelines for choosing an Optional Subject:

  • Choose a subject as your Optional in which you are interested, feeling comfortable and you are familiar with.
  • Don’t go by trends or rumors and gossips
  • The Optional subject has a great impact on your score as it ahs 500 marks in total and what you score here will have an impact over your ranking if you get through all the three stages.
  • You can go for the subject which you have studied at your graduation level as you are allready familier with that subject.
  • You have to go throgh the previous year’s question to get an idea about the nature of the questions asked by the UPSC.
  • Discuss with seneor aspirants, experts, previous topers regarding choosing optional subject.

Hope this will help you!
