Hi,

Now, you can appear for the coming CSE Prelims 2017 which will be held on 18th July 2017. The Civil Services Exam – CSE is held by the UPSC every year on predetermined dates and the dates of the exam are declared in advance.

See here >> Calendar for UPSC exams

For appearing in the IAS CSE exam, you need to have a bachelor degree and there is no need to acquire a high score or first class as the UPSC clearly mentioned in its notification that one has to have only a bachelor degree of any stream, passed or you must be in an ongoing final year for appearing in the exam. The university from which you have secured your degree must be a recognized one.

Nature of the Preliminary exam:

You might have known that the Prelims is an objective test and it has multiple choice questions where you need to choose a right answer from given alternatives. There will be a negative marking system and one mark will be deducted for three wrong answers. The Prelims comprise of two paper; one is General Studies Paper I and another one is CSAT- Civil Services Aptitude Test. Marks of the paper 1 will be counted on wich your presence for the Mains exam will be decided. Paper 2 – CSAT has qualifying nature and marks here will not be counted but if you score less than 33% in CSAT then your first paper will be not be assessed so the papers are important.

Preparation for the Preliminary exam:

Generally, you will find factual questions in the Prelims and you need to have in-depth knowledge of the syllabic content and the current affairs. The UPSC comes with the notification containing detailed syllabus and the procedure for application. The notification usually comes in the month of February.

Some guidelines for the Prelims study:

  • First upon mug up the syllabus and then start reading related standard reference books.
  • Maintain brief notes so as to revise the whole content before the Prelims.
  • Make habit of reading a Newspaper daily and also jot down some points from it.
