Dear aspirant,

Civil Services Examinations are conducted annually regularly by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). CSE is a three stage exam which includes Preliminary Test (Objective), Mains (Written-descriptive) and Personality Test (Interview). Here Prelims is a common test for both IAS (Indian Administrative Services) and IFoS (Indian Forest Services) and rest two stages are held separately for both IAS and IFoS. IAS-CSE is a common exam for IAS, IFS, IPS and other Central Services of Group A and B. For coming CSE prelims test, the notification will come on 22nd February 2017 and the PT is scheduled on 18th June 2017. Then the Mains exam will be held on 28th October 2017 accordingly.

Applications are made online on www.upsc.gov.in in the prescribed period given in the notification itself. Application fee is meager and it’s 100 Rupees except females/SC/ST/PH candidates who are exempted from paying the fees. As we discussed above, prelims test is an objective one and it’s only meant for a rectifying purpose. Marks of PT are not counted in the final score which is based on Mains and Personality Test. There is a negative marking in the Prelims and 1 mark will be deducted for three wrong answers. Prelims Test consist of two papers with each having 200 marks; one is the General Studies Paper 1 and second one is the CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) of which CSAT is for qualifying purpose where you need to score 33% otherwise the GS Paper 1 will not be checked. Then comes the Mains exam which is descriptive one and here you have to write for 1750 marks. Mains exam consists of 9 papers which are as following – Four GS Papers, two Optional Papers, an Essay Paper and two Language Papers. Language papers are compulsory and of qualifying nature where one will be English Language paper and another will be of Scheduled language. Language papers are allotted 300 marks each and these marks are not counted in the final score. You have to write for Four GS Papers, Two Optional papers and one essay paper and each paper has been allotted 250 marks which makes 1750 marks. You know that the IAS exam is a general one and IAS officers are meant to administer and to execute policies; so these officers are required to be familiar with all general subjects and are supposed to have some capabilities like decision making, reasoning, analytical capabilities. The syllabus for UPSC CSE exam is devised in such a way that you have to study History, Economics, Geography, Culture, Polity and Governance, General Science, Ethics and Aptitude. Along with four GS papers, there are two papers for optional subject and you can choose any optional subject from the list, provided in the notification. Here you get an advantage choosing an optional subject where you can choose a subject with which you are familiar with. Optional Subject may be from Humanity or it may be from Medical sciences or even any engineering one so by choosing a right subject you can score good which will help you to get a good rank in this a prestigious exam. Now we come to Essay paper and here you have to write 2500 words for 250 marks. Thus you as of now might have come to realize that this exam tests you thoroughly which makes you an efficient administrator.

Finally there is a Personality Test which is most often called an Interview. Marks here are 275 and you are supposed to be verified by experts for able personality traits and they may check your presence of mind and will see if you have any officers like material in you. As this test has been named as Personality Test, you are tested here for your personality and not for knowledge as they have already checked your knowledge in Mains exam itself. Thus, together Mains and Personality Tests form your final score against 2025 marks in total. Final list consists of generally 1000 candidates who are supposed to have training in the Mussoorie and further in the respective academies according to the different services. Now as you have decided to get into the administration then don’t have any second thought in your mind and start your full fledge preparation with all your dedications.
