Food technologists mainly work in the food processing industry, universities or the Government to develop and improve food products.

They apply their knowledge of chemistry, physics , engineering, biotechnology and other sciences to develop new and better ways of preserving, processing, packaging, storing and deliveringfoods. Research and development of newer varieties of protein rich foods, supplementary foods that are substitutes for items such as eggs and meat, developed from vegetable sources such as soya offers many opportunities for food technologists. Hotels, hospitals health farms etc offer variety of opportunities for these specialists.
With processed food chains with foreign tie ups emerging on the Indian scene, food technologist will have opportunities to improve their prospects. Agri-exports have picked up tremendously with the encouraging involvement of the corporate sector and this has led to further diversification and utilization of the skill of food technologists. Job titles could be food technologist, food scientist, quality assurance manager, professor, product development manager, research and development manager , research scientist, food quality control manager, plant manager, product development scientist, food analyst, food consultant, food & drug inspector etc. Entrepreneurship offers lucrative prospects especially in the food processing business.

Hello friend, food technology is the study of science related to processing of food stuffs. This processing involves preservation of fruits, sea foods, meats, cooked foods, vegetables, juices and beverages and the manufacture of confectionery, snacks, as well as packaging of these for marketing.

The food technologist is trained to apply scientific knowledge of chemistry, biology, physics and engineering to the processing of food stuffs, quality control, storage, research and other related things.

Food technologist are also known as food scientist, study the physical, chemical and biological composition of food. They are engaged in processing of food stuffs, preserving and packaging and search ways for enhancing flavors and the nutritional value of food stuffs. Quality control of fresh and processed foods is their responsibility.

The main job of a food technologist is as follows:

Research for devising new and improved food processing techniques

Guiding the food processing, conservation and preservation of food stuffs.

Creating new food stuffs generated from plant and animal sources

Improving existing techniques for economizing processing, adding value to the processed food, creating new tastes for providing impetus to marketing and consumption of processed foodstuffs.

Evolving measures such as infestation control, fungicidal treatment and insecticidal storage to protect foods from spoilage and damage.

Examining foodstuffs for contamination, adulteration, food value, etc. by biochemical and nutrition tests and quality control measures.

Developing new methods and processes for recovering useful and utilizable by products from industrial and domestic wastes of food stuffs.

Use of processes such as blending, antioxidant substances to increase the shelf life of processed and preserved food products.

The branches food technologists work in include cereals, grains, meat and poultry, fats and oils, seafood, animals foods, beverages, dairy products, flavors, stabilizers, preservatives, colors and nutritional additives.

The food technologists who are involved in research and development aspects are studying foodstuffs to analyze their structures and composition and the changes which occur during preservation and processing. Research helps in identifying the effects of processing on microorganisms, in identifying factors affecting flavors and textures of foodstuffs.

Food technologists are also work in applied research a field which is concerned with developing new food stuffs, better processing methods, use of new sources of proteins, carbohydrates and fats for values addition, with affecting the quality of foods.

Besides these job opportunities, a food technologist may also join academics.
