Jewellery designing, as a career, may have been once limited to the traditional kaarigars (who mostly played the dual role of designer-cum-manufacturer) but with the global upsurge, which brought in its wake changing perceptions of what jewellerry should mean to a woman; came the demand for professionally trained and qualified jewellery designers, at par with international standards. This is not to say that the traditional craftsman does not stand today. Where the trained designer scores over the kaarigar is that the former is aware of trends, and the specifics of jewellery designing. And it's no longer only about carving design on metal, because avenues like marketing and production, or even tapping the vast export market the opportunities are endless and constantly growing. Today jewellery design as a career is steadily grabbing international attention. India has produced award-winning jewellery and accessory designers
A course in jewellery designing would give a student basic information on the different kinds of stones, colour schemes in jewellery, design themes, presentation and framing, designing individual jewellery pieces, men's jewellery, costume jewellery, jewellery costing, etc.

Jewellery designers prepare sketches-by hand or on the computer-to conceptualise the design. After consulting with the customer or the manufacturing team, designers fashion detailed drawings, a structural model, computer simulations or a full-scale prototype.
