Dear Aspirant, if you are going to appear in the civil services examination (CSE), you must be aware of the current examination pattern and know-how therein. The last time when the pattern got changed was the year 2013 so you are supposed to know about the current syllabus. The pattern, this time, is such that you will be thoroughly evaluated for the number of abilities that are required to become an IAS officer. Previously we had two optional papers and one General Studies Paper in the Main Examination and in the Prelims there was a General studies paper and another was one of your optional subject papers. Now the pattern has altogether been changed as per the need and demands from academic experts to search the able and right candidates for this highly prestigious service. Preliminary Test: 400 marks

  • Two papers –1) General Studies (200 Marks) 2) CSAT-Civil Services Aptitude Test (200 Marks)
  • Negative Marking (one mark will be deducted for three wrong answers)
  • CSAT paper is of qualifying nature where you need to score 33% marks (the marks of the CSAT Paper will not be counted and only the marks of GS Papers (200 Marks) will be considered for Qualification for Mains Exam purpose)
  • Prelims marks are not counted in the final score

Mains Exam: 1750 Marks

  • Nine Papers – including two language papers (Each for 300 Marks)
  • Four General Studies Papers (Each for 250 Marks)
  • Two Optional Subject papers (Each 250 Marks)
  • One Essay Paper (250 Marks)
  • Languages and GS papers are compulsory but the marks of the language papers are not counted as these papers are only of qualifying nature.
  • Out of the two language papers, one is English compulsory and another one is any scheduled language
  • You have to choose one subject as an optional subject from the given list of subjects. You will find this details UPSC official notification for the exam.

Personality Test: 275 Marks

Total Countable Maximum Marks 2025 (Mains + Personality Test)

As you have seen now the syllabus mentioned above is all inclusive and it will test yours in-depth knowledge for diverse subjects with your socio-developmental leanings at its best. Generally, UPSC comes with the notification in the Employment Newspaper and on the official website of the UPSC, i.e. www.upsc.gov.in containing detailed syllabi in the month of February and Prelims exam is held in May/June every year.
