Dietetics is the science concerned with the nutritional planning and preparation of foods . A dietitian applies the scientific principles of nutrition to the preparation of diffrent kinds of food for people enjoying good health and for those suffering from disease. cookery is only a small part of dietetics. in a hospital, dieticians are responsible for providing therapeutic diets to patients especially for those for whom the diet is also a special part of the treatment. they plan menus and devise special recipes when necessary. they keep in touch with the patients, observing their progress and explaining their diets to them. dieticians may also be put in charge of all the food services in a hospital as dietitian catering officers. by and large dietetics is formally studied at the post graduate level, although it may be a part of the BSc home science curriculum in food science and nutrition specialization. post graduate diploma or degree course in dietetics or dietetics and applied nutrition or equivalent is open to graduates in home science, medicine, science , hotel management and catering and allied degrees. MSc in home science, food science , nutrition and dietetics is offered in the home science department of various universities. to become a registered dietitian with the Indian dietetics association , one has to qualify the registration examination, after completing your post graduate diploma or master's degree , one can take up a six months internship in a multi specialty hospital recognized by IDA for internship and supervised by a registered dietitian. the internship should be done continuously or in two installments of two to four moths each, with a break of not more than six weeks. or one should possess two years of experience as a full time dietitian in a multi specialty hospital of minimum 150 beds and an internship certificate.
