India is entering the field of haute couture on the international scene and Indian designers are getting to display their creations in international stores
. Indian fashion designers are being approached by global chains to create separate lines of clothing and accessories. The garment export industry and the fashion outlets in the country are growing. There is growing demand not just for haute couture but also for sports wear, leisure wear and the ready to wear segment of the industry. To be a successful fashion designer one needs to natural flair for anticipating new trends and exceptional business flair , self confidence, adaptability, an eye for detail, manual dexterity, visual imagination, sense of color, a photographic memory for details, sufficent technical ability to grasp the intricacies of cutting and willingness to do routine boring work during the
trainingperiod. Ability to draw beautifully is not necessary but basic aptitude for visual expression- drawing , painting, exploring color and texture is important for fashion designing.

4. Technical skills in areas such as patter cutting, grading and garment construction
5. To be able to draw, either by hand or on the computer
6. Good communications skills to explain their ideas clearly and persuasively.
7. The ability to meet deadlines and work within a budget
8. Business skills and commercial awareness, particularly, if they are self-employed
9. Good negotiation skills when selling their own designs
10. To keep ahead of trends in colour, fabric and style.
11. Strong organizational skills
