Hello My Dear,

Yours is a very good question indeed and I am happy that you are thinking on such things and wish to improve and be ready for the job market. Petroleum is one of the most critical sectors for a country like India and more so Infrastructure. Infrastructure is the key area and petroleum, oil & gas are a part of infrastructure.

I am also glad that you decided to approach CareerGuide.com for seeking guidance and clarification for your query.

My colleague here Ms. Jyoti Dhingra has already excellently adviced you about the aptitude which is required for making a career as a petroleum engineer. However I would like to further add some of my thoughts which will be helpful in the long term to you...

Apart from the aptitude aspects, you also need to have a sense of a critical factor while woring as a Petroleum Engineer. That critical and much demanded factor today for any engineer is PROJECT MANAGEMENT.

Project Management is a very critical and specialised field where every engineer should master. Ultimately irrespective of the level you are wokring in an organisation, you are contributing in some definite way to the concept of Project Management.

Since Petroleum is a part of Infrastructure, Project Management is the need of the hour in Petroleum industry as well as it is required for construction industry.

By learning Project Management, you are a Petroleum Engineer can scale the management heights and become a Project Manager sooner that a normal engineer becomes.

Also it is adviced that you take up certification courses in Project Management like CAPM and PMP. Details of these certifications offered by PMI, USA can be had from their website www.pmi.org

I hope you will think over this as a long term stable career path.

Best Luck

Hi,

Greeting's for the day!!!

Despite the fact that petroleum engineering is an attarctive and high paying career option, not much information is available on it. Typiaclly, a petroleum engineering graduate is given the job to discover natural sources of oil and examine the same. Similarly, developing th elatest machines and equipments which can be used in the extraction and processing of oil is part of the job of a petroleum engineer. Petroleum engineers have global career and are hired by global oil companies.

The Petroleum Engineering is divided into 2 parts:
1. Upstream Sector:
Consists of activities like exploration, production and exploitation of oil and natural gases. After gaining a qualification in petroleum engineering, the engineers work in the exploration and production activities of petroleum and other related products. Using the latest drilling technology and geophysics for the exploration of oil reservoirs, they exploit the same for maximum output.

2. Downstream Sector:
Consist activities such as refining, marketing and distributing of petroleum products. Production is not the only wor carried out in a petrleum company and the job of petroleum engineer does not get over as the oil is produced, rather , it starts at this stage. Refining process is crucial for an oil product as then only it can be used. Marketing and Distributing department may require a petroleum engineer to ave some management degrees.

Job Prospects:
Career prospects are uite attarctive in petroleum sector as petroleum companies have great influence and offer attractive salaries to employees. The demand for petroleum and petroleum products is only expected to increase and the increase would lead to creation of new jobs. In fact, there is great demand of efficient petroleum engineers and almost every young graduate in petroleum engineering gets a job offer from petrol and gas companies from India and Overseas.

Required Aptitute for Petroleum Engineers:
1. Excellent academic record in BTech in Petroleum Engineering is a must.
2. Technical exposure during various projects carried out during the coursee shows that the candidate can work effectively when exposed to real scenarios.
3. Excellent numerical and computer skills are expected from petroleum engineers as most of the time there would be computer simulation required for further analysis.
4. Skills to plan out project and execute them with team spirit are further requirements.
