Which course to take up being a commerce student after 12th class?

Hi I am a commerce student and need guidance on the career options available. The subjects of interest for me are maths and english. I like maths a lot but do not like the chapters sets and relation and function but recently got to know that these are the main chapters in Maths honours. Regarding English , I am interested in doing English honours bit my English isn't that good and my grammar is quite weak so I am afraid wether I will be able to do this course. I like accounts too but the theory part of accounts is a drawback for me. Which course or subject should I select as my career option. Thankyou!

Hello dear student.....

First of let me introduce you to me, i did my MBA in finance from IIM shillong and currently working as a financial anlyst in a private company, having more than three years of experience in the same field.

Coming to your query about career choice after 12th - twelve in commerce stream exams, I would suggest you go for either Bcom and Ca- chartered accountant which is very good career choice for you as you said you are good in maths, accounts than it will be good and interesting for you as it is your interest areas, you will definitely clera it just a little hard work and focus you should have to succeed in this field.
CA are having good opportunities in every where now a days, after completion even you can open your own form or can get a very good jobs in both private and public sectors.

You need some guidance and training for that search for the best coaching for CA in your place and go for the course and work hard you will clear all the papers slowly, it needs a little patience too and agian side by side you do BCom and MCom as clearing CA will take and by that time you will get graduation degree in your hand as both course are realted it will not be a difficult task for you. even coaching centers will help you in that type choice. Most of students are doing like that only and it wont be any issues.

Hello My Dear...

Maths, English, Accounts, Commerce... A very much versatile selection and liking you have in your mind. I can very much understand your dilemma and would like to tell you that you are not the only one who has such dilemmas. So be relaxed and do get worried and tensed. I am glad that you took a right decision of approaching CareerGuide for seeking guidance and clarification. We will surely help you remove your confusion.

Before I advice my part, would like to tell you a bit about myself... I am an Educationist and an Economist! I have been into career counseling for more than seven years now and have been guiding students from the fields of commerce / management / law / engineering / finance. I am also an author and my articles and research papers are published across the nation in reputed newspapers and magazines for more than ten years on topics including career management, finance, law, management, economics, etc. I am also into teaching for some years now.

Looking at your mixed and confused selection, I feel that you are best suited for Chartered Accountancy course or MBA Finance course. Being in the commerce field, English and maths are not the actual careers. If you want to major in English and maths then you should have chosen Arts or Science field for respective fields.

Therefore since you like maths a bit and also accounts a bit, it will be good if you join Chartered Accountancy course or Cost Accountancy course or even Company Secretaryship course. All these courses are professional courses and of high repute in the society and industry with growing job opportunities. If you are not inclined towards these course, then after your BCom graduation you can go for an MBA Finance specialization from a reputed B School.

Lastly I would like to tell you that do not have fear for any subject. Always remember if you put in sincere efforts, practice and dedication you can remove the fear.

I would like to suggest a psychometric assessment for you which is also available on CareerGuide.com.com which you can do it yourself at your home. That will help you greatly to know your inclination and abilities for successful career.

Best Luck My Dear...

Hi friend,

As you said you are a commerce student and you have keen interest in Maths, the best career option for you can be Actuarial Science. Actuarial Science is the discipline that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in insurance, finance and other industries and professions. This is the highest paid profession in the world. You are eligible for this course if you have completed 18 years of age and have secured minimum 85% marks in mathematics in class 12th. Besides Actuarial Science, you can opt for CA (Chartered Accountany)course, asyou like accountancy as a subject. For CA, you have to clear CPT exam after 12th. It is 4 hrs exam and has 4 subjects: Accounts, Maths, Law and Economics. Questions asked in this exam are of multiple choice. You have to secure at least 60% marks in aggregate and 30% marks in individual subjects to pass this exam.

There are a plenty of other career options also:

1. Cost and Management Accountancy(CMA/CWA)

2. Company Secretary (CS)

3. Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)

4. Certified Financial Planner (CFP)

5. LLB

6. BBA/MBA

7. Equity Research Analyst

8. Journalism

9. Mass communication

10. Hotel management, etc.

If you are intersted in English Honours, then you can go for Law, management, Mass communication, Public Relations, Hospitality, ect., degrees after completing BA(Hons)in English. You can also be a teacher by giving UGC NET Exam.

All the Best for your career.

Hello

Chartered Accountant
Thank you for choosing Mera career guide and writing to us. I appreciate your level of understanding on your strengths and weakness at this level. Brilliant! You have well explored what you are good at and what you are not and also have some knowledge about what is taught at degree level and what constitutes the major part of the degree.

You have straight away mentioned that Maths and English interests you the most. Don't you like Commerce? Commerce can also give you professional careers like if you complete the CA course or the CS course. I would advice you to go on this commerce stream only if you like it else stick to maths or English as you have mentioned. Why dont you take up the psychometric assessment available on the website here? This test will guide you through your personality and will tell you if you are suited to Commerce/ English or Maths.

As you have asked on maths and English, let me guide you on these two subjects and related career.

1. Maths: With a BSc Maths, you can work as a Business analyst, Management trainee, Market analyst, Market researcher, Industry analyst, statistician and many more. Some students also complete MSc Maths or even a PhD Maths and work as lecturers or professors at colleges. If you complete PhD, it is the highest academic achievement and very honourable. Please do not worry that sets and relation are the major part of the degree. The syllabus depends on the university that frames it and it can certainly differ from one university to the other. Also some universities offer choice for students to select courses and if sets and relation is listed on choice subjects, you can avoid it and still study the other part of the degree. I sincerely advice you to go through the syllabus and choice subjects of a few universities and take admission from the university that frees you from sets and relations. Actually, please do not get frightened about sets, it is a part of the degree and if you love maths you can find ways to learn this sets just for a semester may be.

2. English: You can choose BA English, BA English literature, BA Mass communications, BA Visual communications, BA Journalism and many more. Dont ever think that you are weak in grammar and for this reason you may not be able to study a degree level in English. Of course you will be taught from the basics and if you follow up with that carefully, I am sure you would shine in English subject. You can also download some ebooks on grammar from internet, or buy work books on grammar from book stores and yes, youtube has plenty of videos that can teach you basic grammar to advanced grammar. All this will prepare you well for a college degree in English. My sincere advice is to not neglect English assuming you are weak in grammar. As you will be taught from basics anyway, you dont have to worry much. Moreover if you prepare from now, I am sure you will succeed in this degree.

My best wishes to you.

Dear aspirant

Thank you for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com. Good of you to have done a lot of self analysis and passing the information to us. You are already doing a commerce subject now and it is highly essential to first ask you if you want to go in commerce line itself. If you like commerce then choose to study BCom. Commerce maths is a lot different. Although you will study sets and relation a little, you wont study so much in your bachelors level when you do your Bcom. For example, you might have sets and relation if you study BSc maths and you might be definitely required to sit for these subjects but in a Bcom commerce study not all universities may offer sets and relation in their syllabus. So i advice you to go through the individual college syllabus for BCom subject.

Choose to study Bcom only if you really like to stick to commerce line all your life. As you like maths, i believe commerce line will suit you the most. For example, after Bcom, you can choose to do MCom. this again will require maths in your masters study. Moreover you will also do maths in your career. You can also specialise in accountancy if you like, if you take accounts then you can become an auditor in your career. To become an auditor, maths is a basic subject. Moreover studying BCom and CA Is also important. If you complete Chartered accountancy course then it is a professional career and will also give you excellent high paying jobs. CA is a prestigious job.

If you dont want to study accounts then you can choose to do finance, To study a finance subject again BCom is the basic subject. After a Bcom you can either study MCom or MFM - Master of financial management. This again is a maths intensive subject and will not require sets and relation. Alternatively you can also choose to do a professional course in finance known as CFA Chartered financial analyst. This again is very prestigious in finance route and will give you very high paying jobs.

Finally i think Commerce route will give you more clear route as it is an intensive maths subject. You should decide whether you want commerce, accounts or finance as either way your ultimate destination will be a chartered professional career. And not to forget, you will be studying maths all this life with no sets and relation.
