Hello there

Thank you very much for contacting counsellors at CareerGuide.com. I am glad you took the right decision at the right time to contact counsellors and seek guidance. I am certainly happy to help you solve your query today. Before i go on please let me introduce myself. I am Gomathi and i have been counselling students on career and education since twenty three years in India. I understand you want to be an IAS officer in future. Hats off for the decision. I have counselled so many students and i hardly get to talk to one student a month who has interest in civil services. Whilst students are attracted to MBA and Software industry it is very appreciating to see your interest for the development of your society. I would be pleased if you could stay with this ambition without any diversion and if you could do it, you will achieve it.

So straight away answer your question on the subject, I would say you to consider doing BSc degree itself. For a dream career as an IAS, it is actually not necessary to study one particular subject. Though students generally choose to study three year bachelors degree in History, Economics or political science most commonly. There is a main reason why i tell you to consider doing a BSc rather than a BTech.

A BTech is a professional and more demanding course. Its college study and work schedule are generally very with tight deadlines. The college hours itself run from morning 9 to evening 5. And the BTech course is also highly tough and intense, requiring you to study hard to get a pass. You may know you need to prepare for IAS exams by attending coaching classes every day for at least a year. Students who are highly inclined to an IAS role, mostly prepare for at least a year or two minimum. If you manage both BTech and IAS coaching class, many students feel exhausted and might give up their dream IAS career. Instead if you choose studying a BSc, your college hours and study schedule will not be as tight as a BTech degree. This will give you more time to prepare by attending coaching class and do well in services exam.

A BTech degree is more focused to give you work in corporate environment and it is less suitable for students aiming civil services careers. Actually you can choose any degree but as you have interest in BSc Biomed science, please feel free to study this course. Also join IAS coaching class and do many practice papers to clear the exam with high rank.

All the best.
