Companies these days are aware of the fact that students can be very good when it comes to memorizing but practically can be not very capable.
So to judge the capacity of the candidate they conduct tests whereby they get to know the practical knowledge of the shortlisted candidates.
These tests are similar to the Aptitude or screening tests which helps students know their potentials. Similarly the tests conducted by the MNC focuses on the practical application mainly through the use of Logic or reasoning capacity of the candidate.

Yes these days companies conduct psychometric tests while recruiting people. This helps them to know the personality, attitude, flexibility, adaptability, etc of the prospective candidates. This is very important apart from the domain knowledge and degrees.
Aptitude Tests are also conducted which includes questions on reasoning, english comprehension, quantitative ability, computer knowledge, etc. For technical roles, a separate techincal round is also conducted.
