A student who is interested in technology as well as in  IT sector is generally confused about what to opt among Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA) and Bachelor in Technology (B.Tech) CSE.

Though the two aren’t really comparable as B Tech is an engineering course and BCA  is a degree course.B.Tech is the discipline; engineering which even deals with hardware side, while BCA deals with the application.B.Tech more comprehensive and more practical comparatively.

What is BCA?

B.C.A. or Bachelor of Computer Applications is an undergraduate Information Technology course. Computer Applications designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks. The duration of Bachelor of Computer Applications is three years, divided into six semesters. The course provides sound practical skills addressing problems which arise from computer systems and designing applications. Owing to the wide popularity amongst the student's various Computer Science Schools have come up offering Computer Science graduate programs at par with B.C.A.  B.C.A. can also be pursued through Distance Learning Programs by various Institutions.

The Syllabus of the three-year BCA course includes subjects involving database management, operations systems, logical analysis, programming languages, software design and client-server technology.

What is BTech CSE?

Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering knew as B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering is an undergraduate program in Computer Science and Engineering. In this course, the student will learn about theoretical foundations of information, computation, their implementation, computation and function in computer systems. The engineers are mostly involved in the development of the hardware and software systems of the different aspects of computing. The duration of this course is about 4 years and the syllabus is spread across 8 semesters in which candidates will learn about basic engineering techniques such as in the first year it includes various subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Engineering drawing and mathematics and from second year they are focused on core subjects which include data structure, programming, Algorithms, Computer networks, Web Technologies, Operating Systems, Digital Logic, Databases and Computer Architecture and Theoretical computer science. After completion of this course, graduates will be
Involving in system designing, coding, project management and computer programming.Implementation and troubleshooting of computer networks.
Research about the existing problems and plan solutions for the problem. The course combines theory with practice.

  • BCA graduates have career options as programmers and grow to become project managers.B.C.A. also paves way for a post graduation (MCA) in the relevant field which is always preferred.B.C.A.They can seek jobs both in public and private sectors, banking, insurance, accounting, stock markets, e-commerce, and marketing sector.
  • Btech CSE is the most promising sector with high growth in opportunities. CS engineers are involved in designing, implementation, management and deployment activities of both hardware and software products.
  • A CSE degree holder can work in Computer Software & Hardware implementation department, Web designing, Telecommunication Industry, Multimedia, and Database management.Btech CSE from top universities fetches good placements leading to a bright career.

Difference between BCA and B.Tech

B.Tech is more job-focused while a BCA is a good platform for higher studies.A B.tech graduation is more professionally valued compared to BCA.BCA focuses more on practical technologies and applications used in daily life. BTech is more about developing concepts and testing them, solving problems providing a step higher opportunities while BCA is all about the application;is the study of putting these concepts in work. BCA can be said as a major part of B.tech but not equivalent to it.

A post graduation course like MCA would make BCA graduate equal to a Btech graduate technically. However pursuing BCA at a government college or at a top university which provides good placements is also a good option.

Another advantage for Btech graduate is one can change or jump into another career option like from designing software to database management etc.which means career options are many compared to BCA graduate.

If one has completed their 10+2 in Commerce, Art or Medical stream, but you have decided to shift one's focus to IT, then the option is a BCA.
