BCA(Bachelor of Computer Application) is a degree course which trains students to make their career in the field of computer applications and software development. This is a 3-year undergraduate course. BCA is designed to produce graduates who have the necessary skills and knowledge not only in computer and information technology, but also in communication, organization, and management.

Students who study BCA are very well versed in programming languages such as Java, C+, HTML, SQL, Python, and DBMS. They also have knowledge in various computer applications and the latest developments in IT and communication systems.

There is a lot of demand in the IT industry specifically for BCA graduates, who will be sharing the work along with Engineering graduates on the same projects. So because of this fact, there is more demand for a BCA graduate than for a B-tech graduate as number of BCA graduates are less. We can now infer from this that there’s a lot of scope for a BCA graduate in future.

BCA can be pursued in two ways

  • Regular course: This is the usual way of graduation i.e. going to a regular college every day, attending classes, projects, and practicals. Attendance of the candidate matters.
  • Distance learning or distance education: Candidate gets enrolled in a university and afterward he/she may not be always present to take classes. Candidate can take online classes, Institute provides instruction materials by mail or post.

Here the confusion arises whether we must go for a regular BCA degree or distance education? Which will be more beneficial? Are both equally benefiting? The answer to all these questions lie in the fact that both regular degree BCA and distance education has some pros as well as cons.

Now let me state some disadvantages of opting for distance learning course for BCA:

  • BCA is a very vast and somewhat tough course. BCA includes software development of computer languages such as Java, C++ which are some of the tough languages to grasp. Software engineering and artificial intelligence courses are also taught in this degree course so it may get very difficult to cope up with this if you are not a regular student.
  • If you are not into self-study and you need regular guidance of teachers then BCA as distance learning is not good option for you.
  • BCA needs regular practical practice of the codes you write on computer and if you get stuck somewhere then you need guidance of a teacher, which is not always possible in correspondence course.
  • Physical presence in the campus and interaction with peers and teachers, indulging into group exercises and projects is very important aspect for personality development of an individual but it is missing in distance learning programs.
  • Many multinational companies do not recruit candidates with a correspondence degree in BCA as they consider that they are not fit for the company as they do not have work experience with peers.
  • Sometimes it is very difficult to score good marks in some reputed institutions like IGNOU which provide distance learning in BCA.

So these were some pros about distance learning program in BCA but there are always some cons also if there are pros. Now I’ll state some advantages of distance learning program in BCA:

  • BCA as correspondence is very affordable course as the infrastructure cost is low for college and colleges can enroll many students in a batch.
  • No traveling Candidate can safely study at home. No cost of transportation as there’s no need for going college daily
  • For completing the syllabus of BCA, a student can study at his/her own pace. No deadlines or time limits, so they can adapt their own routine. Some students like to study off pressure, so distance learning is the best mode for them.
  • Students may opt for another course along with BCA and make their free time fruitful. This way they can learn more as well as different things in less time.

If we analyze the pros and cons of distance education for doing Bachelor of Computer Application we may arrive at the conclusion that it totally depends upon an individual's capabilities and interest that which mode he/she must go for.

Also Know : Do I need to be exceptionally brilliant to pursue BCA?

If you are good at doing self-study and want to learn more than just BCA then you must go for distance education or correspondence course. If you want to achieve a high post in IT sector and you want to learn how to open up and deal with people so you must go for a regular course for BBA.
