Interesting, that you are looking out for a long term sustenance in the industry.
Firstly, you have answered your question by yourself only.
Patience is the key word.


Since HR is more of a man-management oriented job and these days the stress that we work with, Patience is the key required for you to sustain with the job.

Other than some of the other skills required would be as follows, though I am sure you are aware of it yourself, but still listing down a few:
Being Empathetic: You need to be empathetic and not sympathetic. When you are sympathetic, you do not let the person think, but when you empathise, you allow the flow of energy and once the person is relieved, he can find solutions all by themselves.
Listening skills: Apart from just being Patient, you need good listening skills. You cannot be a selective listener. You got to pay attention to each and every word they say.
Non-Judgmental: A very important point is being non-judgmental. We as humans build up perceptions about people whom we are surrounded with, without giving a consideration to the reason for their behavior. Once perceptions are formed, we see the person in that light itself and it is then a vicious circle. So best is being non-judgmental
Innovative and creative: I do understand that it is a work place and being innovative all the times with set rules is not feasible. But sometimes forgetting Rules and regulations and theory is important when handling issues at office. Being innovative and discussing issues helps create a friendly environment. At the same time, employees are not bogged down by daily chores.
Non Personalize: Though when people work in the same organization they tend to get a bit personalised. Never ever as an HR personalise with any of the employees. Once you personalise, you can be taken for granted, so keep your distance, but at the same time be approachable.
Rest all like team work, policy making, keeping a tab on new information and development and passing it on are things which are general and all of us carry it with us.
