Hi Ankita,

Firstly please note that PhD is basically Research

It is a field, whereby one who specializes or knows the basics of the subject, goes deeper and through Research comes up with some new techniques or brushes up the existing technology.

So to pursue a PhD in Psychology, one needs to have basic knowledge in Psychology right from the development of tests, measures used to formulate the tests and its application value as well as therapies or counseling format done.
Thus one needs to be a Psychologists or rather have studied a 3 years Undergraduate course followed by a masters degree in Psychology to pursue a PhD program.

As such I have no clues about your basic or undergraduate degree.
But after an MBA in HR, you are not eligible to a PhD in Psychology.

Though, there are university that provide you a masters degree in Psychology. Once you have done your masters, you are then eligible for the Research program.

Wish you good luck...........

Dear Ankita,
Thanks for writing to www.careerguide.com. I am happy to learn that you want to pursue higher studies. I hope you have taken this decision based on your career plan. PhD is 3-5 years of emotional, intellectual and financial investment. In contemporary scenario, HR professionals with PhD are valued.

Well, you can pursue PhD in management from any management institute as well as PhD in industrial psychology from Psychology department. However, some Psychology departments do not allow any students from different disciplines. Therefore, I would recommend you to explore Psychology departments (contact academic coordinator of the department telephonically) that allow PhD scholars from different discipline to do PhD.

Each University/Institutes have their own process for the admission and PhD research. I am sharing generic process for your reference.
Process for PhD enrollment and PhD propgram:
PhD Entrance Test (PET): UGC has mandated PhD entrance test for the admission in PhD.

Assign guide: Once you claify PET, students are assigned guide. Some University/coll

Credit course:Some University expect students to gather certain credits before beginning with PhD research. They also offer credit courses, take lectures for under-graduate students, encourage students to participate and /or present paper in seminar/conferences, take up short course on research methodology etc.

PhD research:After completing adequate credit courses, you can start working on PhD.
PhD research involve preparing PhD research proposal, present departmental seminar on PhD proposal, incorporate feedback from the seminar, begin research, present plan of analysis seminar, analyse data, present result and discussion seminar, write PhD synopsis and prepare draft PhD thesis.

Publication: It is mandated to publish at-least two research papers in peer-reviewed journal before submission of PhD thesis.

PhD Synopsis submission: Once students have analyzed the overall data, prepare synopsis and submit the PhD synopsis to the University as the norm. Students have to submit PhD thesis within one year of the submission of synopsis.

PhD thesis submission: Once PhD thesis is reviewed by PhD guide, you can submit the thesis as per the University/Institute's guideline. University will designate two external reviewers and after their feedback on the thesis, viva is arranged. PhD guide informs student about the progress.

PhD Viva-voce and Open seminar: Viva is an interview of the student with external examiner following by PhD open seminar. Open seminar is PhD seminar where student present PhD research to students and others who were invited for the seminar in the presence of PhD Guide and External Examiner. Based on the students performance and participants questions answered by the student, examiner provides recommendation too the University whether the student is eligible for the award of PhD.

Hope this provides you good reference for your career planning. If you need any guidance related to PhD research, feel free to talk with me. I would be happy to help you.

Wish you best luck for your career!
