Interior Designers work on following areas most of the times:

1. Planning :Interior designers draw upon many disciplines to enhance the function, safety, and aesthetics of interior spaces. Interior designers are concerned with how different colors, textures, furniture, lighting, and space work together to meet the needs of a building's occupants. Interior designers are involved in planning the interior spaces of almost all buildings-offices, airport terminals, theaters, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals, and private residences. They help to improve these spaces in order to boost office productivity, increase sales, attract a more affluent clientele, provide a more relaxing hospital stay, or increase the building's market value.

2. Style and Decoration: I
nterior designers focus on decorating: choosing a style and color palette and then selecting appropriate furniture, floor and window coverings, artwork, and lighting. These days an increasing number of interior designers are becoming more involved in designing architectural detailing, such as crown molding and built-in bookshelves, or planning layouts of buildings undergoing renovation, including helping to determine the location of windows, stairways, escalators, and walkways. Interior designers must be able to read blueprints, understand building and fire codes, and know how to make the space accessible to the disabled. They frequently collaborate with architects, electricians, and building contractors to ensure that their designs are safe and meet construction requirements.

3. Supervision:Interior designers sometimes supervise assistants who carry out their creations and perform administrative tasks, such as reviewing catalogues and ordering samples. Those who run their own businesses also may devote a considerable amount of time meeting with clients and contractors, developing new business contacts, examining equipment and space needs, and attending to business matters.

Therefore the interior designers get involved in variety of works and hence provide impressive designs for the interiors.

Residential Design-
Thanks for consulting careerguide.com
Key areas of designing include:-
Residential design may include space planning of the living areas and bedrooms of a home, as well as selection of the color schemes and materials. Residential designers design the interiors of houses, apartments, and condominiums.

Residential Remodeling- Remodeling may be complicated, as the place to be remodeled is pre-existing. There are many problems for the remodeling designer to consider. He needs to identify load bearing walls, water lines, and anything that may be a hurdle in the remodeling process. He also needs to come up with a safe and eye pleasing solution to the design problem. This may be especially complicated when the entire house is being remodeled at once.

Commercial Design- Commercial design includes hotels, schools, healthcare (hospitals, clinics, medical offices), retail stores, and any other public buildings.

Kitchen and Bath Design- Kitchen and Bath design often includes the design of cabinets, so cabinet shops may hire Interior Designers to provide a cabinet layout for a kitchen, bathroom, or even a laundry room. Designers must follow guidelines to provide a safe environment for their clients. Kitchen and Bath design also includes the selection of the proper materials (countertop, flooring, backsplash) and appliances. It is a desirable field for Interior Design graduates, as there are many opportunities in the Kitchen and Bath field.

Hospitality Design- Hospitality design is a part of Commercial design. It includes hotels, motels, restaurants, bars and clubs, resorts, theaters, and other places that offer 'hospitality'.

Lighting Design- Lighting designers specialize in the design of lighting in interiors. They are concerned with the types of lighting (ambient, accent, and task), the amount of lighting needed in a specific room, and the placement of the lighting sources.
