An air hostess or a cabin crew member is a person who looks after the needs of the passengers on board. They are also known as steward or stewardess. Their main function is to look after the safety of the passengers. They are required to give requisite instructions to them before boarding and during the journey. They are required to keep the boarders calm and serve them as per their requirements. These people need to have a minimum amount of physical qualification to be able to be eligible for the job of a flight attendant. They are not supposed to keep any unwanted and inappropriate tattoos on their body as it may offend the passengers.

The male attendants are not supposed to keep any kind of beard or color their hair in a way that looks unnatural. There are many training centers to train the flight attendants. Some of them are set up by the airlines themselves. Different airlines have different minimum age requirements for the crew members. For some it is 18 years while for others it is 21 years. The basic purpose of this is to ensure that the members are mature enough to understand and comprehend difficult situations and to solve the problems that may come during the flight.

These people are also trained to serve the passengers food and beverages so that they may enjoy their journey and be fully satisfied with their flight experience. Flight attendants are however, different from pilots and other people in the cockpit.  Nowadays, many coaching institutes have been opened up in the country to provide generic flight attendant training to the candidates wanting to pursue their career in this field. These institutes provide professional training to the candidates by giving them an environment equitable to the one present in the plane. Even graduate students can join these training centers and make their way in this filed.

Minimum qualification required to become an air hostess

The prospective candidates have to qualify certain criteria in order to be eligible to become an air hostess. The first and foremost aspect is to be fluent in English. English is a universal language that is spoken by many people across the globe. Since the work of the flight attendant is to provide a good and healthy experience to the passengers, they need to converse with them in a language that the passenger feels comfortable in speaking. The second most important thing is that the candidate should be able to swim properly.

 

There are a lot of incidents when the plane crashes in water and people need to swim to be able to come near the shore. The third important thing for the candidate is to have a valid passport of the country in which his/ her permanent residence is. The cabin crew members also need to qualify some minimum physical requirements which are often different for different airlines. Their height, weight, range and eyesight are some of the things which are considered before appointing them. Also, an Unmarried candidate is preferred. The section is based on a written examination, group discussion and interview with the panel of experts of the air Crew.

The average career span of an air hostess lies between 8 to 10 years. After that he/ she can move to the ground level duties such as training the new candidates or managing certain tasks, etc. This profession is mostly preferred by women because the pay in this career is relatively high and also it is clean and interesting job.

The prospective flight attendant can take a certificate course, Diploma course or a regular degree in any of the following to be able to qualify for the job. These are as follows:

The steward/ stewardess needs to be calm, patient, petite and flexible enough to be able to carry off this job effectively. He/ she should have a clear speech of voice and a good personality and should know how to carry him with grace. He should also be proficient in languages such as Hindi, English and other foreign languages which can be advantageous for future promotion and increased salary. The salary of a flight attendant lies between 1600 to 90000 INR. There are some airlines which offer more than 2 lakhs a month to the senior hostesses.
