The 101
Four things every family should understand before the ranks come out — because JoSAA rewards the prepared and punishes the improvising.
JoSAA (the Joint Seat Allocation Authority) runs a single combined counselling for the IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Your JEE Advanced rank unlocks IIT choices; your JEE Main rank covers the rest — one registration, one choice list, one allotment process.
You register, fill college–branch choices, and JoSAA runs mock allotments before the real rounds begin. After each allotment you pick Freeze (keep the seat), Float (keep it but stay open to better) or Slide (stay open within the same institute). Those three words decide thousands of futures.
Seats left vacant after JoSAA go to CSAB special rounds. In parallel, many state authorities run their own B.Tech counselling — several accept JEE Main scores — and strong private universities hold their own admissions. JoSAA ending is not the road ending.
The classic dilemma: a lower-demand branch at a top institute, or your dream branch at a newer one? There's no universal answer — only data (placement records, opening/closing ranks) plus an honest read of your own interests. Deciding by herd instinct is how regrets are made.
Exact rules, schedules and seat matrices change every year — always verify against official JoSAA, CSAB and state notifications. Tracking those notifications for you is part of what we do.
1-on-1 · Rank to seat
One dedicated expert from rank day to reporting day — JoSAA, CSAB, state and private tracks, all planned as one strategy instead of four scrambles.
What's included
Sessions are 1-on-1 with a certified expert, in Hindi or English — and parents are welcome on every call.
Book a Counselling SessionA clear, mentored path — from the day your rank arrives to the day you report to your institute.
A counsellor maps where you stand — your rank or percentile, category, home state, budget and the branches you're drawn to.
We place your rank against several years of JoSAA opening and closing ranks to draw honest institute-and-branch bands.
A tiered shortlist across IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and state or private options — ambitious, realistic and safe.
Order decides everything. We build and double-check your preference list — and your Freeze / Float / Slide plan — before you lock.
After every allotment: freeze, float, slide or move to CSAB — decided with a counsellor, not by group-chat rumour.
Reporting, verification and fees for the seat you accept — with state and private backups kept warm until you're truly in.
Every coaching centre has an "admission cell". Here's what a psychometric-first counselling platform does differently.
Branch choice shapes four years and a career. Our proprietary psychometric assessment checks what actually fits you before the list is locked.
CareerGuide has been a trusted career counselling platform since 2009. JEE counselling support is an extension of the same rigour.
Your admission season is backed by CareerGuide's network of 500+ certified career experts — not a single overloaded agent.
CareerGuide has guided 30,000+ students across its programmes — from stream selection to seat allotment.
JoSAA schedules, CSAB rules and state counselling calendars shift every year. Tracking the official notifications so nothing slips is part of the job.
Sessions happen in the language your family is comfortable in — and parents are encouraged to join every call.
Every rank has a path
Your shortlist is built from your actual rank, category and home state — never a one-size-fits-all list.
Path 1 · IITs
Entry is through your JEE Advanced rank in JoSAA. Here the branch-vs-institute trade-off is sharpest — and several years of closing ranks beat one year's screenshot.
How it's filled
23 IITs · allotted via JoSAA on JEE Advanced rank
Path 2 · NITs · IIITs · GFTIs
Allotted in the same JoSAA process on your JEE Main rank, with home-state quotas at NITs adding real strategy. CSAB special rounds pick up what JoSAA leaves vacant.
How it's filled
31 NITs · 26 IIITs · GFTIs · JoSAA + CSAB rounds
Path 3 · State & Private
Many states run their own B.Tech counselling — several on JEE Main scores — and strong private universities (BITS and others) hold separate admissions. Often the best value seat lives here.
How it's filled
State CET/JEE-Main rounds · BITSAT · private admissions
Closing ranks move every year with paper difficulty and seat matrices — targets are set with you, not promised.
Tell us where you stand and a JEE counselling expert will get back to you within one business day — before the result or after it, whichever day you're on.
Every year, lakhs of students receive a JEE rank — and then meet a process very few of them have been taught: JoSAA registration, choice filling, mock allotments, Freeze–Float–Slide, CSAB special rounds, state counselling and private admissions, all running on their own clocks. Two students with the same rank routinely land in very different institutes, simply because one had a plan for the process and the other discovered it live.
JoSAA walks down your preference list and allots the first seat your rank can claim — so the order you write is the strategy you get. A good list is built from several years of opening and closing ranks, weighs home-state quotas at NITs, and already knows what you'll do if Round 1 hands you your fifth choice: freeze it, float for better, or slide within the institute. Deciding those answers before the portal opens is most of the game.
The hardest counselling conversations aren't about ranks — they're about identity. Chemical engineering at a top NIT or computer science at a newer IIIT? We put placement records, branch-change policies and closing-rank trends on the table, and pair them with a psychometric read of your actual interests, so the decision is made with evidence instead of herd pressure.
JoSAA is the headline, not the whole story. CSAB special rounds fill vacant seats after JoSAA closes, most states run their own engineering counselling — many accepting JEE Main scores — and universities like BITS admit through their own exams entirely. A complete counselling plan keeps every track warm, so no single round ever feels like the last chance.
